“Mozilla on Tuesday posted the finished versions of Firefox 7 (Linux, Mac OS X, Windows),” Electronista reports.
“The new release is still part of Mozilla’s fast track schedule and focuses most on running faster and more efficiently than before,” Electronista reports. “Version 7 uses 20 to 50 percent less memory and also now cuts back on memory leaks and waste from Javascript.”
Electronista reports, “Closing tabs now directly removes those tabs from memory and leads to more resources free as time goes on.”

I’m sorry, but this “accelerated release schedule” that breaks all the add ons practically every month is just stupid.
I won’t be upgrading until 1Password, etc. all get a chance to catch up, at which time they will release Firefox 8 I’m sure.

My iMac. Only thing I miss is noscript.
Not 100% I’ll stay with safari, but so far i don’t exactly miss firefox… Not a good sign for Mozilla.
What kills me is “just because Google is doing it” does not mean you have too.
I can’t tell you how many users I support that call me to complain that something in Firefox is no longer working and then I find out they just let it keep upgrading to version 6. Did not consider “why” or “what” plugins would break.
I’ve downgraded quite a few to 3.6.x. At least that version is stable and compatible. Then I turn off the auto update.
There is a reason for the version number sequence and what number means what. Firefox is just going to piss off or confuse many users.
Have these Firefox updates broken any add-ons? They haven’t broken any of mine.
I think people are assuming that a move from “6.0” to “7.0” puts add-on compatibility at risk. It’s just a number, folks. There’s nothing magical (or evil) about it.

“cuts back on memory leaks”… It doesn’t eliminate them, just cuts back on them. Great.
Safari’s not doing great in this department either. I sleep my Macbook for weeks at a time, and after a recent update to Safari, I now have to quit it every couple of days to free up RAM. Even if I have no windows open in Safari at all, by that point Safari and its webcontent sandbox are taking up over 600 MB RAM combined.
That’s more than Firefox 3.x on my work PC ever ate up, and I had over two dozen tabs open for weeks at a time, far more abuse than I ever heap on Safari.
(by “sleep my Macbook” I mean to say it goes for weeks without restarts, it sleeps when not being used, and Safari isn’t running any RAM-eating scripts while the system’s asleep)

Don’t fully blame Mozilla……Google started this mess with Chrome. Mozilla just copied the idea. Either way you look at it though its a mess. This fast release is horrible for IT people. Trying to keep Firefox and Chrome updated is a nightmare, especially Chrome. Every time Flash is update Chrome is updated because they have there own version built in. Google is making the mess……Flash, Faster releases of browsers, WebM Codec……. Whats next that they are going to throw a wrench into and mix everything up!
And still no support for Lion fullscreen mode – despite the fact that all the other major browsers have implemented it… Heck, I can even run IE in Fullscreen mode via Parallels! lol.
Also, you have to wonder why Firefox is still lumbering along with the (at this point) proprietary Gecko. You’d think they’d just do the easy thing and implement WebKit which is much further along in implementing future standards… All the work has been done and they could just focus on building an app wrapper with lot’s of nice features. Then they could actually keep up this loopy update schedule without impinging on their users.
