RIM poised to miss tablet estimates as Apple’s revolutionary iPad dominates 19-1

“Research In Motion Ltd., depending on its new PlayBook to bolster sales as demand for its BlackBerry phones withers, may have shipped just one of the tablet computers last quarter for every 19 iPads from Apple Inc.,” Hugo Miller reports for Bloomberg.

“The company, which reports earnings tomorrow, probably sold about 490,000 PlayBooks during the first full quarter of sales, according to a Bloomberg survey of analysts, compared with the 9.25 million iPads shipped last quarter,” Miller reports. “Analysts cut estimates for full-year PlayBook shipments, to an average of 2.2 million, according to the survey.”

Miller reports, “The Waterloo, Ontario-based company will likely report its first revenue decline in nine years when it releases results tomorrow.”

  1. How short our memories are. What about all those years that Microsoft outsold Macs by at least that ratio? We were still happy with our Macs that only had a tiny fraction of the market. It doesn’t mean that RIM tablets won’t come good eventually. Enough of the Apple triumphalism already. Lets enjoy our Apple products whilst recognising that time at the top in the electronics industry is usually short.

    1. Are you sure it isn’t SOLD to retailers (e.g., Best Buy)? If that’s the case, some segment of RIM doesn’t care if anybody actually bought them at stores, so long as they got their money. Question is, how many are still on backroom shelves at the retailers.

      Agreed about the second sentence.

  2. RIM shareholder bloodbath. It’s going to get ugly and I suspect there’ll be a shareholder cry to get rid of the co-CEOs. I feel bad for RIM’s employees, because there definitely will be layoffs.

  3. ” Lets enjoy our Apple products whilst recognising that time at the top in the electronics industry is usually short.”

    We will enjoy ourcApple products.

With regard to the last part of your above quoted sentence, you should know by now that their is no electronics industry usually when it comes to Apple.

Apple is unique and operates differently from the members of it’s industry.

So sit on your “whilst” and think about that!

    1. @ Applesmack. You have “ourcApple products”? Wow, how about sharing this new breed of gear with us smartass. “you should know by now that their is no electronics industry usually when it comes to Apple.” Huh? Can you even speak English? Finally, you have a problem with the word “whilst”? I think you need to go and broaden your obviously limited vocabulary. But don’t tell me, I bet you write “off of” and “anymore” don’t you. Twerp!

  4. Look at the ratio. The analyst is describing shipped to shipped. Just uses the term sold, as if shipped and sold are the same. This is the same mumbo jumbo as Samsung selling 1,000,000, when it was shipped that and sold about 20,000. No one wants this crap. The analysts report shipped because that’s the only number given to the public.

  5. I actually own an iPad and a Playbook…along with an iPhone

the playbook has very good multitasking better than the iPad/iOS…the QNX OS is still not as refined or smooth as the iOS, especially in zooming, pinching and picking up gestures.

saying that, I surf with the PB a lot and like it in landscape mode. it’s not very good surfing in portrait mode. the iPad has no issue both ways and especially in portrait is superior due to the bigger size.

I would say the pb is a few updates from perfect for a 7″ tablet.
