“We heard back in March that Apple might have been considering giving its chip making contract to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC),” Christian Zibreg reports for 9to5Mac. “Reuters and Taiwan Economic News later followed-up, claiming TSMC had already begun test runs of Apple’s A6 processor.”
“Per both stories, the A6 chip will be manufactured on TSMC’s 28-nanometer process and is coming in the second quarter of 2012, conveniently matching the expected iPad 3 arrival,” Zibreg reports. “DigiTimes this morning quoted TSMC’s head or research and development Shang-yi Chiang who confirms his company is gearing up for mass manufacturing of 28-nanometer chips.”

It is DigiTimes’ business to report the same thing again and again. They run this story from late winter.
Yes, very good. And where are the chips going to be deployed? Implanted in the rear end of Big Foot?
Big iFoot
Now wouldn’t that be an interesting industrial robot design for inserting iSuppository?
Intel now is ramping up for 22nm chips with that 3D transistor technology. It’s a pity that these two teams can’t team up and build the technologies together in one chip.
TSMC apparently has 14 nm chips in the works for next year.
next year, as in 2015.
Shame Apple won’t go to Intel about this, Intel would say yes to making the chips.
(they said reluctantly ‘yes’ in one of their latest comments on this topic)
Shame everybody has to do their own thing, ARM’s low power design + Intel’s 3D/22nm process would take the world by storm.
Apple has really pissed on Samsung’s chips (pun intended).
