Microsoft’s Windows Phone ’07 manager quits, still hopeful

“Microsoft’s mobile ambitions took a hit Monday as its Windows Phone group’s General Manager revealed he was leaving the company,” Electronista reports.

“The 21-year veteran will quit as of September 2 to found a startup focused on a mix ads, the cloud, mobile, and athletics,” Electronista reports. “He told GeekWire that he had already moved his Windows Phone tasks off to mobile general manager Matt Bencke.”

Electronista reports, “Kindel stressed that the departure was amicable and that he was very confident the Windows Phone team would do well. In a goodbye e-mail, he thought that Windows Phone was a source of pride for the company, although he hinted he would no longer be tied to the Windows ecosystem. ‘To the Windows Phone team: I may stop using some Microsoft products now that I’m out of here,” he said. “But not Windows Phone. The BEST product Microsoft has ever built. Do not let up!'”

  1. “Best MS product ever built”

That’s easily true. The Windows phone may be the first time MS has strayed from their usual format of blatantly stealing and copying every single aspect of Mac products. Four years from now it will be a very respectable product that nobody buys … akin to their amazing Zune.

    Long live Ballmer!

  2. “I may stop using some Microsoft products now that I’m out of here,”

Anyone else think that’s an odd statement to put in a letter to MS employees? Sure…everyone wants a MBA..and I’m sure he already has one…but to make that statement in a company “letter” is telling.

    1. I think that’s MS employee code for “I’m Free! I’m Free!”

But I’d better say I’m going to keep using the phone because I haven’t established my corporate account yet to buy my new iPhone through, so I’d lose all my contacts and photos.

  3. I doubt he left so that he could finally use a Mac.

I’m sure he plans to use an iPod, iPad, and iPhone as well.

He’s obviously going to be glad to be able to use Google for search too.

What a life changing experience leaving Microsoft can be.

  4. i know it’s old, but you just have to watch the infamous Ballmer “iphone” clip one more time.

“Let’s see how the compeition goes,” said Steve B. well, we did.

Then: “Right now we are selling millions and millions and millions of phones a year, and Apple is selling zero.”

Now: Apple is selling about 5x as many iPhones as Windows Phones in US, and @ 80 million per year worldwide.

Then, about the Zune/iPod: “We’re in the game.”

Now: MS is out of the game. the standalone Zune has been abandoned. instead, it is now incorporated into Windows Phone and … (see above)
    .
beyond any question, in mobile Steve J has obliterated Steve B. This clip is beyond embarrassing. and yet Ballmer is still a CEO. wow.

mabye Kindel saw the texting on the wall.

    1. Quiet, you! Steve Ballmer is doing a GREAT JOB, do you hear! Any MS stockholders or, heaven forbid, board members reading this, DISREGARD AlfieJr’s comment!

Whew, caught that in the nick of time.

  5. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer laughs at Apple iPhone on January 17, 2007

Interviewer: “Steve let me ask you about the iPhone, and the Zune, if I may. (Ballmer smiles) The Zune was getting some traction, and Steve Jobs goes to MacWorld and he pulls out this iPhone. What was your first reaction when you saw that?”

    Laughter from Ballmer

Ballmer: “$500! Fully subsidized! With a plan! I said that is the most expensive phone in the world. And it doesn’t appeal to business customers because it doesn’t have a keyboard which makes it not a very good email machine.”

It never gets old. Enjoy your crow pie, Mr. Ballmer.

  6. Lots of Apple trolls…tisk tisk, thought we were more mature than saying things like “piece of crap that smells!” ect. Haven’t seen one mature remarking about google…sad. If someone could (not a troll) convince me to not delete this app that would be great.

And in reality windows phone 7 is cool, get used to it, cooler than android(but hey it’s all about personal preference…right?)
