LG said to be in talks with Apple to supply Retina displays for next-gen iPad

“LG Display says it plans to break rival Samsung Electronics’ hold on advanced displays in their stiff competition for supremacy in 3D televisions,” Kim Yoo-chul reports for The Korea Times.

“LG said it has no intention of follow Samsung into developing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays for smaller portable devices,” Kim reports. “Samsung is misleading the market because OLED displays are not suitable in terms of picture quality, response time, energy consumption and contrast ratios for smartphones and tablets,’ said Kwon Young-soo, chief executive of LG Display in a meeting with reporters, late Thursday.”

“Kwon said LG will put more focus on investing in OLED displays for large-sized TVs as it believes the technology could offer a better response time in these,” Kim reports. “‘LG Display may release a 55-inch OLED TV set sometime in the latter half of next year,’ he added.”

“He said more smartphone manufacturers will release new models employing LG’s ‘Retina Display’ that has been used in iPhones and iPads,” Kim reports. “Kwon’s remarks come following talks with Apple to supply picture quality-enhanced Retina Displays for the upcoming iPad 3.”

Did I miss a model in the iPad that had a Retina display?! Oh wait …. Future past to present with the model changed for the current time line! Got it!!

    1. sadly, that is so true. it’s 2011 and some people’s thoughts seem like what my granpa described people older than he were saying way back when. always wonder what these people look like, what kind of work they do, what background they have that causes them to think they have to push someone down to keep themselves up.
got to see one when the guy who came up for trial for crap mouth/mind tweet about obama. maybe, i can only guess, it’s still generational. most all of my friends, post college and that general age, don’t laugh at this crap and really don’t get it.

        1. Because the subject is serious, and should be treated appropriately. Writing Devil is correct in that many (most, hopefully) in the younger generation do not notice or care about race, in general. I find that very encouraging.

As for Obama, I find it interesting that *everyone* refers to Obama, a mixed race individual, as ‘black.’ Regardless, what is important to me is that Obama is intelligent, rational, caring, and eloquent. You may not agree with some of his positions, but he is open to discussion and debate, as were the founders of this country. I find that to be highly refreshing, and it gives me hope for the future.

  2. “OLED displays are not suitable in terms of picture quality, response time, energy consumption and contrast ratios for smartphones and tablets,’”

Does that mean all those Android tablet users who got Samsung OLED have been screwed compared to what Apple is planning to provide in the new iPad 3?

Too bad, so sad…boo ha ha.

    :>)

    1. You should take that LG comment with a large grain of salt. Direct emitting LED/OLED technologies are likely the future of the majority of displays. LCD displays are more complex, thicker, and heavier. LED/OLED displays have the potential to be very thin and even flexible. It is instructive that the most recent trend in LCD displays is LED backlighting. The next step is to eliminate the LCD layer.

LG is likely behind in OLED display technology, so it is downplaying it in favor of the latest LCD display technology. No surprise there.

    2. > contrast ratios

How is a contrast ratio of “infinity” unsuitable?

LCD is a sub-optimal, stop-gap technology. Samsung are the furthest along the right track.

  3. Wow… So lets just examine how much money Samsung is losing by letting their little b*tch android reseller do this… not only at they in the unenviable position of competing against the iPhone (getting their asses handed to them, even in Korea), but now they’re getting a lawsuit, AND losing the display business… to their bitter Korean rivals… and oh yeah, that customer they just lost is the second biggest publicly traded company in the world.

Bad day at the office? 😉

    1. Contrast Ratio? haha….. Right! 😀 Response Time? mwahaha…. iDiots will fall for anything. Tested Response Times = iPhone Retina IPS (LG) is an abysmal 25ms vs Super AMOLED being 0.01ms. Which is the fastest ever tested of any screen type. Want Transparent Screens? You can’t have them with any screen that’s backlit obviously because there are layers behind the LEDs that have mirrored surfaces.

Want flexible screens? Can’t be done with Retina IPS. How about just curved? Won’t work properly either. AMOLED is the only technology capable of having the Touch Interface manufactured right into LED layer like Samsung does.

Lastly is PRICE……… using Retina IPS LED technology is the most expensive part of the iPhone. What do you people think it would cost for Retina IPS screen for an iPad then? Yes….. prohibitive at best. Samsung is still being considered for new iPad screen and are the only ones that have demonstrated 300ppi screens. No matter what LG says, it’s their success that hangs in the balance in not getting the contract and no way they can compete on price this round!

Super PLS Plus will no doubt be what gets used for iPad. They may lose the A6 SoC to TSMC, but that’s fine. It’s not like they don’t have enough potential custormers already being at IBM’s superior Gate First 32nm/28nm HKMG process production. You must also include their own needs having just become doubled in their Smartphone sales and LG losing mobile sales (Samsung may even have sold more Smaphones than Apple last Quarter). # Phone maker in America and Apple leases space in Samsung’s Austin Semiconductor facilities!
