“The humongous Apple mother ship campus will one day call Cupertino home, but it’ll sit so close to Sunnyvale and Santa Clara that residents there will be able to look out their windows and catch a glimpse of Steve Jobs heading to work — along with 12,000 other employees,” Mike Rosenberg reports for The Mercury News.

“But the tech giant’s pure economic prowess, with its potential to raise nearby property values and bring good jobs to the region, is easing — for now, at least — the typical NIMBY-like disputes and border wars that have plagued these cities in the past,” Rosenberg reports. “So even though Cupertino will soak up the worldwide prestige and millions of dollars in tax revenues, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara are not raising alarm yet about the extra traffic, noise and other suburban headaches sure to be buzzing around their borders.”
Rosenberg reports, “Sunnyvale Mayor Melinda Hamilton and Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews say that even with their cities having no control over the project or direct tax benefit from the giant building, they’ll be riding the Apple wave all the way to the bank. ‘There will be people who want to buy homes here, to eat lunch, and we’re right on the border,’ Hamilton said. ‘Proximity is a huge deal. Having more and better jobs brings the whole region up. That success breeds success.'”

The building’s a big halo!
Cupertino residents would be batshit stupid not to embrace it.
I don’t care where Apple builds it… or asks to build it.
Fill in the blank with any city “_________ area residents greet Apple’s proposed mothership campus with enthusiasm”
and it would be true.
I seem to distantly remember that the proposed increase in employees was only about 20-30% over the existing amount. So why the hype over the increase? Yes it’ll be great to see the shiney new doughnut, but I think I can wait…
oh! A mere 30 percent! Almost nothing . . . A measly one third! Not worth a penny.
Because the tax base Apple will generate will keep their property taxes low? Just a hunch but when people are able to keep more money in their pockets they generally are happy about the reasons why.
Yes I’m with you. Why would anyone care unless you work for AAPL or live there? C’mon folks, get a life! It’s a building. I’d much rather the stock price goes up and they build a very pedestrian crib.
Given the design, it’ll most likely reduce traffic, noise, etc. Where 9000 employees used to enter, and drive around blocks and blocks to get to their parking spots, there’ll be 12,000 or 13,000 that will get off the interstate and drive right into a parking garage. There’ll be less surface traffic than before. Plus, there’ll be many more trees and fields, etc.
While the ring may seem huge, in fact, it’ll probably blend in far better than what exists now.
I like the overall design, I think it fits quite well within the space allotted.
At four stories, will there be elevators/escalators? Housing 12,000 in a circular structure only four-stories tall is quite a challenge. Airports have those moving-floor things. Is that part of the equation?
I’m looking forward to the EDs (excruciating details) as they emerge. This building has the potential to pack a lot of very cool surprises.

Yeah, I think the new campus will be kewl and all. But won’t it be like putting a big target on the Earth for alien warships to aim at? What are they going to think of it THEN? After Cupertino has become one giant crater?
