Multiple Android tablet peddlers give up, focus on 4- to 5 -inch smartphones

“Branded handset vendors as well as ODM/OEM handset makers, who have ventured into the tablet PC segment, have recently switched their focus back to the development of 4- to 5-inch high-end smartphones in the wake of recent lackluster sales of Android-based tablets, according to industry sources,” Daniel Shen and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.

“With the exception of Samsung Electronics, which has managed to grab a 10% share of the global tablet PC segment, sales of tablet PCs from other vendors including Motorola Mobility, Research in Motion, LG Electronics and HTC have been flat so far, the sources indicated,” Shen and Shen report. “While reducing their investments in the development of 7- to 10-inch tablets, handset vendors and ODMs have instead strengthened their R&D for [4- to 5 -inch] Android smartphones.”

  1. wait a minute, weren’t these all the deep thinkers who talked so big about how they would of course destroy the iPad with their competitors?

Where are their big mouths now?

  2. “With the exception of Samsung Electronics, which has managed to grab a 10% share of the global tablet PC segment”

So, someone has to be the Zune to Apple’s iPad. Then again, Samsung is pulling a Blackberry, by using its vast distribution network to sell tablets where the iPad has yet to launch.

    1. I think they’re following Nokia here more, which RIM tried late to emulate. Samsung is working to penetrate hard in the Asian countries (from pacific, to S. Asia like India to a bit farther west), where Apple still isn’t prominent. Plus they have their home turf.

  3. But..but that Apple-is-doomed Adrian Kingsley-Hughes hath proclaimed on ZDnet blog, just this morning: “2011 – The year of the Android tablet”

Without bothering to donate a click on his blog, from the little blurb on Google news, he seems to be suggesting:
“Apple doesn’t. Or, say you are a restaurant and need to put a tablet at every table with a menu on it? Vizio wins here. Apple doesn’t. Or, like we just saw at Oakley’s headquarters, let’s say you are building a custom retail experience where you can … ” Wow, that’s all I could see, without falling for the link-bait, and that’s all I needed.

Well, I don’t know about you, but that guy sure isn’t afraid to risk his reputation where his heart is.

  4. Doubt the 10% for Samsung. They’ve always based that on what Samsung said they moved last year, which was “ship” not sold.

I think the reality is that sell through is quite “smooth” lol.

    1. Shipped, not sold. Samsung sure have learned how to spin the BS. They’re TV ads are hilarious, acting like they have a waiting cult of customers who just gotta have their POS. Spinning makes you dizzy.

  5. Well there are 2 big issues to android tablets. Ive looked at all of them as i wanted one (love my android phone). I didnt buy .

First even with honeycomb the os just is not “there” yet for a tablet. Second you’ve got multiple vendors making all sorts of different size tablets. It makes the whole thing confusing to a consumer imho.

Im getting an ipad at this point and im an avid android lover. Its just not making it in the tablet space and im tired of waiting for the next version that is “supposed” to deliver.
