RIM half-CEO’s biggest fear comes to fruition: Apple unveils iMessage app and service

“Look, people that know me know that I’ve been a BlackBerry fan from the beginning. The entire reason BGR was started was because I was breaking information on upcoming BlackBerry devices, mainly because I was obsessed with RIM and wanted to share that information. As we’ve all seen, however, RIM isn’t the market leader any longer,” Jonathan S. Geller writes for BGR.

“The real problem with RIM is that it hasn’t innovated for years,” Geller writes. “In that time, RIM’s entire product portfolio has been arguably lackluster, reduced to meaningless hardware upgrades and meaningless software upgrades.”

Geller writes, “A high-level source at RIM told me that co-CEO Mike Lazaridis’ biggest fear was Apple creating a BlackBerry Messenger competitor. Today, Apple introduced iMessage, an app and service that not only looks better than BlackBerry Messenger, but probably works better as well.”

MacDailyNews Take: What was that we wrote earlier today? Oh, yeah: iMessage: Works on all iOS devices and includes delivery receipts, read receipts, typing indication, and works over both 3G and WiFi. Non-intrusive, like the new Push Notifications. Won’t interrupt an app in progress. iMessages are encrypted and pushed to iOS devices. And RIM’s half-CEOs both just messed their pants.

Geller writes, RIM’s push email and corporate integration pitch is losing steam, and the company pretty much just got out-fruited.”

MacDailyNews Take: No, we weren’t kidding last August when we tagged Research In Motion “Dead Company Walking.”

    1. there are/were a LOT of things BBM does that blows simple SMS away.

you want to know what it does? Read the iMessage description 😉
      everything iMessage does, BBM did.
and yeah as Dish said, BBM was free to use… and you didn’t have to pawn a kidney after sending 100 texts out of country.

Somewhere, in some dark room in Canada… RIM just called an emergency meeting. 😉

    1. Wow dude that was harsh. We Americans don’t hate Canada because of RIM, we hate Canada because that is were the cold comes from.

J/K my Canadian brothers and sisters we don’t hate you because of the cold but we are mildly peeved. 🙂

      1. Actually, with the prevailing winds coming out of the west, the cold coming out of the north and Alaska being both north and west of most of Canada, we Canadians hate America because that is where the cold comes from.

    2. …and once again we have another example of “The Ugly American”. If you want to know why the U S of A has lost respect among even its allies, if you want to know why we’re thought of as arrogant/ignorant/tactless/uneducated, look no further than Mr. Grady’s comment.

      1. Well, at the end of the day, there is always someone who makes a bonehead comment that does not speak for the masses. Hardy Har Har, I understand exactly what you mean, but I know a lot of very awesome Americans. Maybe they hate us because we absolutely HATE to lose at hockey. Oh yeah, that and the cold! That comment really made me laugh. Well played G, well played!

      2. The “Ugly American” is any American looking to suck up to some imaginary foreign measuring stick. The only one who’s ignorant is you. People all over the world love America and Americans and appreciate the things we have done and do to make the world freer. If some Canadian takes offense at Mister Grady’s comment, then so what … have a sense of humor.

        1. If Grady failed to convince anyone about the arrogance of most Americans, then surely Macuser41 put any doubt well and truely to rest.

          Idiot, 1st class.

        2. Actually “ugly American” is just a nice way of saying “android user”.

          1. Because most android users live in the US

          2. They are cheap.

          3. They are uncouth and ignorant. (as evidenced by my visit to an android fansite yesterday. I was astonished. They were going crazy over the new iPhone notification system crying “copycat!” when nobody knows who, where, or when that came from. Just because it’s already shown up on android doesn’t necessarily mean it couldn’t have been in the making for years at Apple. And just rushed out the door at Google. With Eric Schmidt on the board for so long. Every Google innovation is suspect. Again. On the message board. They were going wild. It was gross)

          4. They don’t appreciate beauty.

          5. They think bigger is better.

          6. They don’t appreciate nuance.

          7. They are clumsy. Or at least have a fascination with the unwieldy.

Pretty much all the qualities that define an “ugly American” in the eyes of our haters.

      3. Ya see, this is what you foreigners don’t seem to understand:

For years now I have sat silently by while snotty Canadians and Europeans make snarky, asinine comments regarding Americans. And yet, when an American simply does nothing more than a “back at ya”, suddenly a line has been crossed. It’s the “ugly American”. Hey fellas, I’ve got some news for you. Americans have been annoyed now for quote some time by the UGLY CANADIAN and the UGLY EUROPEAN. But the problem with both of these groups is that they think their shit doesn’t stink.

We Americans have pulled more than our fair share of weight in this world, we saved the 20th Century, everyone uses AMERICAN technology, and yet you’re always talking about how America has no respect in the world. Excuse me for asking such an uncomfortable question, but, just who exactly thinks they’re in any position to judge us. LOOK AT YOURSELVES!

And here’s another tidbit for you to chew on: We don’t like you either! You may want to consider that before you get yourselves into yet another bind that you need America to get you out of.

Sheesh, you people are so very, very, very unself-aware.

        1. ‘… we saved the 20th Century…’ oh the hubris!!
Well if one post was ever to prove that Americans don’t do irony – this one takes the biscuit.
Well done Mister Grady, you just made Canadians and Europeans come over all warm and fuzzy.

        2. YEAH! You tell ’em! They all use our AMERICAN technology! Where would they all be if we Americans didn’t invent the internal combustion engine, the barometer, the adding machine, the steam turbine and steam engine, the battery, and so many other great American inventions?! They’d all still be living in caves!

Obviously only Americans have contributed any useful technology to the world!

        3. Hey Grady, here`s something for you to chew on:

          Your wife says hi!

BTW if you don`t like us, THEN STOP USING OUR FUCKING OIL YOU FAT TRIPLE BI-PASS FUCK!!!

        4. I really hope your face was all red and you were pounding your desk with your fists between keystrokes…because that how I imagined it.

The thing about being a force for good in the world is a) you shouldn’t be all “why aren’t you patting my back?!?!” about it and b) it doesn’t mean you can do no wrong…like acting arrogant and expecting everyone to kiss you because you did the right thing.

“Ya see, this is what you foreigners don’t seem to understand:

For years now I have sat silently by while snotty Canadians and Europeans make snarky, asinine comments regarding Americans.”

It must be a difficult life when entire countries don’t seem to understand that you’ve been sitting silently by…I feel your pain. Well, at least now it is all out in the open and Canada and Europe (I’m glad you are limiting your hate to them instead of all them foreigners) can skulk away with their tails between their legs.

Also, do some research before claiming that America is the source of all technology. Just ain’t true.

      1. It’s unfortunate that an off-side and totally unnecessary comment has derailed this thread. As a Canadian, I found the original comment a bit insulting. That said, I’m not about to start hurling insults back, especially at all Americans. I’ve met ignorant Americans, ignorant Canadians, ignorant Europeans etc. Ignorance isn’t the private domain of any one country.

I prefer to focus on the awesome Americans, awesome Canadians, awesome Europeans that I have been fortunate to meet.

RIM is a company in trouble. They just happen to be in Canada.

Cheers to everyone, regardless of your zip code or postal code. Now lets get back to talking about tech, shall we?

  1. MDN’s take
“What was that we wrote earlier today? Oh, yeah: iMessage: Works on all iOS devices and includes delivery receipts, read receipts, typing indication, and works over both 3G and WiFi. Non-intrusive, like the new Push Notifications. Won’t interrupt an app in progress. iMessages are encrypted and pushed to iOS devices. And RIM’s half-CEOs both just messed their pants.”

When i read the iMessage description earlier, the only thing that came to mind… BBM on iOS.

There is NO reason to use a Blackberry anymore. iOS does everything BB used to do well. the last thing RIM had, BBM.

      1. What makes you think it doesn’t do group chats? They have group texts on the iPhone. I bet this new service does group iMessages. If it doesn’t, how hard do you think it’s gonna be to add that simple feature?

  2. “and the company pretty much just got out fruited.”

    “It was a run-by fruiting”

    From the movie Mrs Doubtfire:
Stu: [about Daniel] What can I say, Ron? The guy’s a loser. See ya.
    Mrs. Doubtfire: Loser? Oh, yeah.
[Takes a lime and throws it at Stu’s head. Stu looks back, angry]
Mrs. Doubtfire: Oh, sir. I saw it! Some angry member of the kitchen staff, Did you not tip them? Oh, the terrorists! They ran that way. It was a run-by fruiting. I’ll get them sir. Don’t worry.

  3. RIM’s getting way too comfortable with its past market leader position for far too long…just like Nokia. The moment any high tech company stop or slow innovation, it will be the moment the company heading to RIP.

It’s just plain sad to see that there are so many once market leaders, now being reduced to nothing more than “dead company walking”. … Yahoo (search), Nokia (cell phones), RIM (“email devices”), Microsoft (operating systems)…etc.

  4. If RIM wants to survive, They need ONE CEO, that has some vision. The co-CEOs that they have now, just don’t get it.

I’d really like to see RIM survive, they employ a lot of people, they have, and continue to do A LOT for the education system in some of the local universities. They have actually been very, generous in that regard and I respect them immensely for that.

They need to right their ship and soon. I’m a Mac guy. I have no interest in owning a Blackberry or a Playbook, they’re just not my thing. But that doesn’t mean that I want them to fail. There is lots of market share still for the taking, but the smart phone competition is a lot stiffer now.

  5. “…We Americans have pulled more than our fair share of weight in this world, we saved the 20th Century, everyone uses AMERICAN technology, and yet you’re always talking about how America has no respect in the world. Excuse me for asking such an uncomfortable question, but, just who exactly thinks they’re in any position to judge us. LOOK AT YOURSELVES!”
Three words, dude. Pearl Harbor. Vietnam.

  6. And let’s not forget, too, that I tagged them “Research in Standstill” at least before anyone tagged them anything here. Right, everybody? Remember?!

    :/ oh well 🙂
