“On Monday, we reproduced a pair of charts from Asymco’s Horace Dediu showing how Apple (AAPL) overtook Nokia (NOK) in less than four years to become the world’s No. 1 maker of mobile phones — smart or otherwise — in terms of revenue,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
“On Tuesday, Dediu posted “two snapshots of the global mobile phone market in Q1 2011: First by volume and then by profit,” P.E.D. reports. “Apple’s share of the worldwide mobile phone market by volume [is] about 5%… [while] Apple’s share by operating profit is about 55%.

And still they are still trashing the stock by driving it down.
And to think it was only 4 years ago that Steve Jobs stated he hoped to gain a 1% share of the world wide phone sales. That was the goal.
And the industry laughed at him as being an arrogant, know-nothing upstart. Now, revenue-wise, Apple’s is at the top of the heap and just starting to run.
Ah yes, turns out market share isn’t the most important metric of all. Are you reading this Ballmer?
I hope Google still likes the concept of free after shovelling boatloads of money down Android’s development cost.
Reaping massive profits as the pundits claim that Android is winning. Not one Android smartphone vendor is making as much money from selling smartphones as Apple. Once the iPhone gets on T-Mobile and Sprint, sales should really start to pick up in the U.S.
Not ALL the Android vendors, COMBINED, make as much money as Apple selling just an iPhone.
That’s what making 55% of the profits in the whole cellphone industry mean. The rest combined are still less.
I would love to see similar market share-versus-profit share figures for laptops, desktops, and notebooks. I bet the situation is similar (i.e. Apple has a small market share, but a huge chunk of the total profits.)
I’m glad that Apple is concentrating on making high-quality products rather than joining everyone else in the race to the bottom of the market where they’re lucky to make $40 profit on a crappy $299 netbook.

Yes but as far as market share is concerned, Cambell’s Soup (and some kite string company) makes more communication devices then all the others combined.
Talk about high-value brand and disruptive and compelling mobile experiences .;-)
The original info comes from Horace Dediu’s site asymco.com. While it is all well and good the Elmer-DeWitt restates it, it is a shame that MDN does not cite and link to the original author, and give him the hits. Not only asymco, but many other sources in the echo chamber of the blogosphere.
