RUMOR: Apple told AT&T no iPhone 5 in June or July

“One MacRumors reader has… received word from an AT&T customer care representative that Apple has officially informed the carrier that there will be no new iPhone released in the usual June-July timeframe,” Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors.

Slivka reports, “As part of a response outlining AT&T’s criteria for determining upgrade eligibility dates, the agent reportedly offered the following statement as fact: ‘Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future. Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us.'”

  1. BS!!!!

“Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us.”

When did Apple *EVER* give AT&T or anybody else a release date for a new product prior to an official announcement event? This is some junior sales person trying to make a sale of something else today, rather than have the customer put the purchase off on the expectation of an iPhone 5 announcement.

  2. I believe it to be true. The white iPhone 4 was only just released, and the Verizon version only shortly before that. All of the rumors thus far have indicated a September arrival, and I believe that Apple is trying to leak that information to soften the blow when WWDC focuses on Lion with no mention of iPhones or new iPads.

Just because they were releasing nearly annually for 3 years doesn’t mean they can do it forever, especially with supply constraints that might have been affected by the tsunami disaster.

Also, in response to Zeke, AT&T didn’t say they would have news before Apple’s announcement, only that they would post information on their website when they received it.

  3. If there is no iOS 5 event this month then I will believe that it’s pretty legit. This the time when Apple previews the new iOS so developers can have time to update apps for new launch in mid june to mid july.

  4. NOT A CREDIBLE SOURCE FOR RUMOR

    See:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre…1147308&page=6

He finally “remembers” significantly downgrading his account even after several comments suggesting that this or other things will alter your early upgrade qualification.

My early upgrade is still set for 6/25/2011, and I bought the iPhone 4 on launch day 6/24/2011.

The source of this rumor could not be any more unreliable, and even then he’s supposedly quoting from a rep who would have no knowledge of products. See the MacRumors thread for other AT&T rep comments.

This doesn’t mean that the new iPhone will come out on 6/25/2011 either, but clearly this rumor has no validity to it and unfortunately will just be added to the chatter indicating a Fall release. If the past is any indication, it could be just weeks before the release before we actually start seeing tell-tale signs (vacation day blocking, leaked photos, cases, supply chain reports, log files, etc…)

  5. no iphone 5 in july i said this awhile back. Iphone 5 and iphone 5S will be released end of August first of September. Which would fit with the usual ipod updates in sept.

But this is what we were told not long ago when visiting the factory.
