Apple’s iOS doubles worldwide market share over past 10 months; now world’s #3 OS

“Apple’s iOS, the mobile operating system that powers the iPad and iPhone, has more than doubled its share of the worldwide operating system market over the past 10 months,” Jon Brodkin reports for Network World.

“When you count desktops, laptops, mobile phones and tablets as one category, iOS is the third most widely used operating system after Windows and Mac OS X, with share that jumped from less than nine-tenths of a percentage point in June 2010 to 2.24% in April 2011, according to Net Applications,” Brodkin reports. “The data, collected by determining the operating system of devices connected to the Web, shows Windows declining from 91.46% to 88.91% share since June. Mac OS X [at 5.04%, as measured by Net Applications] gained a quarter of a percentage point in that time span but it’s iOS that is Apple’s real growth engine, moving from 1.87% to 2.24% in the past month alone. More than half of that comes from the iPhone, with the iPad and iPod Touch contributing the rest.”

Brodkin reports, “Android holds only 0.66% of the OS market, putting Google’s mobile OS in sixth place behind Linux desktops and Java ME for mobile devices. Symbian, BlackBerry and Windows mobile are in seventh, eighth and ninth place, respectively, behind Android… Apple’s [iOS] 2.24% market share consists of 1.23% for the iPhone, 0.82% for the iPad and 0.19% for the iPod Touch, according to Net Applications.”

  1. Net Applications weights its data in a way that may produce inaccurate OS market share numbers. In some reports, Apple’s actual Mac OS X share is now reported to be north of 10%. I wonder if Net Applications manipulates iOS numbers as well?

    1. In the us it is greater than 10%. Worldwide it is less than 10%.

Matters not much to me because apple take about 50% of the profits
Better to dominate profit share than unit share.

    2. They do.

A couple years ago, NetApps had Mac OS X over 10%, shortly thereafter they changed their net weighting and OS X dropped to 5%. They use the CIA World Factbook to determine numbers of net users by country. The data can be up to 3 years old. If you check the World Factbook footnotes, they say that they count a farmer in China who may use the net once in 3 months, EQUAL to a user in the US who checks the net 24/7. In other words, NetApps is overweighting countries like China, and underweighting the US, that’s why Mac OS X dropped from 10% to 5% a few years ago.

  2. it’s iOS that is Apple’s real growth engine, moving from 1.87% to 2.24% in the past month alone. More than half of that comes from the iPhone

Dead in the water, clearly. 😉

  3. the article may have missed a subtle point – a good reason why android is so low is because even though they may sell lots of cheap ass hardware, most of the owners don’t USE the phone as much as iOS owners do – because their interface still sucks, and they don’t have any good apps. In other words, all things being equal, iOS users are 4-5x more likely to USE the capabilities of their devices…
