Verizon activated 2.2 million Apple iPhones in first quarter; 3.6 million iPhones for AT&T

“Verizon posted results on Thursday for its winter quarter that rode heavily on iPhone sales,” Electronista reports.

“It added a total of 1.8 million new customers, 906,000 of which were regular cellphone subscribers, but was propped up chiefly by 2.2 million iPhones being activated in the network,” Electronista reports. “The carrier’s iPhone activations were less than 18.65 million total iPhones, significantly higher than the 16 million some analysts had been predicting.”

Electronista reports, “A comparison to Verizon’s total platform mix wasn’t made available, but the number suggests the iPhone may have been Verizon’s most popular by a wide margin.”

“AT&T in its quarterly results said it had managed a record number of iPhone activations in spite of the launch of the Verizon edition. It switched on 3.6 million new iPhones, a full million more than it did a year ago and more than 60 percent of the 5.5 million total smartphones activated in the season,” Electronista reports.

  1. Looks like both AT&T and Verizon benefited from the hoopla surrounding the Verizon iPhone launch. Let’s not forget that Verizon sold those 2.2 million iPhones in basically a month and a half. The only losers? Android and Sprint. We won’t kick a dead horse so let’s not include Windows Phone ’07 in that loser conversation.

  2. If it wasn’t for the iPhone, Verizon would have lost customers last quarter. Apple saved the day again.

It is quite scary how many iOS devices are out there. 190M and counting. Next quarter Apple could sell 20M iPhones, 5M iPod touches and 8M iPads. That will be collectively 33M iOS devices added.

This makes a huge marketplace for iApps and is going to drive developers to focus more on Apple apps than ever.

Here’s hoping the stock drives up to $400. It deserves it after the fantastic performance.

  3. MDN is silent on this? After all the articles they wrote about how Verizon was going to run AT&T out of the market. Guess consumers aren’t as dumb as MDN thinks and prefer to have their phones operating on a modern network and not 1980’s technology.

    1. Er, the only 1980’s technology out there is the BULK of the AT&T network….

MOST of their geographic coverage is based on creaky, old GSM/EDGE, a TDMA-based technology developed in the 1980’s….

Verizon’s network is based on CDMA, the technology that ALL 3G standards as based on as well as 4G LTE….

BTW, AT&T’s 3G network doesn’t even use a variable rate vocoder…. It uses the AMR, which is supposed to be muli-rate, except no one’s been able to get it to work in multi-mode, so it operates basically as the inefficient EFR GSM vocoder…. talk about ancient technology!

Next time do some research before posting so as not to appear as a moron….

      1. You’ve got to be kidding? CDMA is junk and its 3G is no faster than Edge. Why do you think Verizon Worthless is moving away from it? You sound like George Bush when you babble nonsense like that.
