Analyst: 2nd-gen Apple TV unit sales top 2 million, 820K sold last quarter

“Shipments of the second-generation Apple TV continue to be strong, reaching more than 2 million estimated units since the device launched late last year, according to a new report,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

“Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities revealed the results of his survey of Apple suppliers on Tuesday,” Hughes reports. “Sales of the streaming-centric iOS-powered Apple TV topped 1 million just before Christmas of last year, and within three months of its launch. That pace showed strong sales had continued after a breakout start of 250,000 units in its first six weeks.”

Hughes reports, “Kuo estimates that Apple sold 820,000 units of the Apple TV in its second quarter of fiscal 2011, which ran from January through March.”

  1. “Shipments of the second-generation Apple TV continue to be strong, reaching more than 2 million estimated units…”

I believe this is what is called “A Successful Product”, despite anti-Apple FUD to the contrary. Poor trolls, you FAILed again. 😆

  2. Yup I bought one last year when they came out. Price and the Netflix capability were deciding factors. Love the ease of use and then ability to control with the iPhone.
Thinking about getting a second one for the bedroom.

  3. Apple TV is simply a beach-head for Apple to stake it’s claim in the vast wasteland that is television.

Television is ready to be remade, and this time the revolution will be televised!

The revolution is choice. Choice in content and time. Internet TV, Apple and others are facilitating this tectonic change.

  4. “a ‘hobby’ transforms into something more meaningful” when the BILLION DOLLAR SERVER FARM powers up! Unlike the 1st generation that I own, the Apple TV has no hard drive storage. Will Apple turn this server farm into the worlds biggest DVR?

  5. tv2 + mlbtv (all Yankees, all the time) + nbatv (all Thunder, all the time) + Netflix (all Bogart & Eddie G, all the time) = adios, Dish Network, DirectTV and Coxsucker Cable Company (aka SuddenStink®)….just need the SoonerNetwork© on it and then my life would be complete.

  6. I’ll join the chorus. I love my AppleTV too, and now I have 2!

I was sick to death of screwing around with laptops and cables and codecs and stuff to get my “acquired” video download library onto a TV or projector. I do not own, or wish to, any of the game consoles that can do this too. The AppleTV is perfect for this, I just need to be a bit more picky in getting the right version of a file, but in reality that has not been a problem for the last 6-9 months.

The only downside for me is needing to keep iTunes running somewhere on the home network as a streaming source. I hope that can change soon. I might have to aquire and old mac-mini for this purpose.

Oh, and for all those old files that you really don’t want to transcode for ATV playback, check out the AirVideo app (and free server). On the fly transcoding of MKV, AVI etc to H264, which you can watch on your iPhone/Touch/Pad and then use AirPlay to push to your ATV. And it actually works great, 720p over Wireless G networks. I am amazed.

  7. I got to say i love my ATV2. I have already almost filled a 1TB drive full of HD movies and HD and SD tv shows to play on my ATV2.
It is so convient to play movies on the tv. Jailbroken with XBMC makes it even nicer not having to convert everything to m4v content.
The netflix interface is also much nicer then that of my blu ray player and others i have seen.
I am sure Netflix loves that they just added almost 2 million more potential customers to their list.
