Analyst: Apple to debut ‘Smart HDTV’ this year

“Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities has been at a China electronics trade show this week, and said in a note to investors that he picked up “data points” that point toward a ‘Smart TV’ launch by Apple, possibly by the end of the year,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider. “‘Our research suggests this Smart TV would go well beyond the miniature $99 second-generation Apple TV that the company released last fall and provide a full-blown TV product for consumers,’ White said.”

Hughes reports, “He went on to say that although Apple has long been projected by company watchers to enter the HDTV market, the Mac maker now appears to be ‘moving down this pace at a faster pace than the market expected.'”

MacDailyNews Take:

“Moving down this pace at a faster pace?” Huh? Does he mean, “Moving at a faster pace?”

Hughes reports, “The biggest pusher of a prospective Internet-connected HDTV from Apple has been analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray. Munster has repeatedly forecast that Apple will introduce such a product in the coming years, with a starting price of around $2,000.”

  1. Supposed to be “moving down this path” but the writer was simultaneously thinking ahead to the phrase with “pace.” It happens when you’re working fast. Spell check wouldn’t catch it.

    1. My thots exactly. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Apple is much better served by selling $100 AppleTV boxes–which simply leverage existing iOS components and software–than trying to come up with a new TV set paradigm, which would involve serious manufacturing costs and risks.

Open the AppleTV to the App Store would be a much better idea. Or licensing Video-Airplay cheaply on every TV, receiver and DVD player.

    2. TVs have too long of a lifespan for Apple to want to get into the market, and the pricing is vicious. A higher priced model doesn’t necessarily mean it’s much better to consumers, especially when all consumers really want are enough HDMI ports and great picture. They don’t care about the other stuff; that’s what all the other boxes are for (DirecTV, Apple TV, Blu-Ray, etc.).

Apple is much better off expanding Apple TV than producing large screen TVs.

      1. You peasants are all expecting apple to come out with a TV like you see samsung and Toshiba coming out with. But with apple I have learned to
        THINK DIFFERENT
They reinvented the mp3 player, the phone, the tablet. Hey, who says they cant reinvent the TV. If they come out with a radically new apple tv then it’s gonna be so different it will blow all you haters away

  2. If they make it, it’ll be a nice product and I’ll get one, but it won’t be a huge revenue generator like the iPhone because the turnover in TVs is small compared to phone which are switched out every 1-2 years.

  3. I’m going to predict that sometime this month Apple will open the North Carolina data center. And every month after this one I’ll predict it again until they do. Sooner or later I’ll get to say “Called it!”

  4. It better be the cat’s pajamas starting at $2,000. I can get a pretty good 55″ LCD HDTV from numerous manufacturers for less than $1,500 or so. They don’t have AppleTV built in, but many have internet apps preloaded.

  5. Bad idea. Apple charges way to much for their monitors, which will probably carry over to the tv. Though they are nice, just way overpriced! Hopefully, they will cut the price and surprise everyone like they did with the iPad… then it could work…maybe.

  6. This would be rather stupid, because you can take every TV set with an HDTV interface – even the cheapest – and connect it to AppleTV. This little box open up the Apple universe for only 99 dollars. But real convenience in the living room will start with an iPad as the remote control in combination with the next software generation.

    1. “But real convenience in the living room will start with an iPad as the remote control in combination with the next software generation.”

It’s already incredibly convenient with Apple’s Remote (Control) app for the iPhone, which BTW, works better than the (beautiful, but very small) remote that comes with AppleTV.

  7. i remain doubtful on this. it simply does not make sense for apple to engage with what has become a “commodity-tier” market… tv’s. perhaps there is space for some special-branded limited production “ultimate tv” that will sell to extreme apple fanboys/girls (ala B+O tv’s)… but for the most part a tv is just a lcd/led panel. would seem far more productive to perhaps ADVERTISE the friggin AppleTV box and/or do some partnerships with samsung/sony/lg to simply EMBED the AppleTV system inside their displays. let them worry about the low-margin panels and plastic cases and simply license the feature. This would instantly supercede all the fragmented “app” features and such that these manufacturers are trying put in their displays and make AppleTV the defacto secondary “system” for people (the “primary” still being cable/sat display). My guess is that this is what Munster Cheese got sniffs of… but just interpreted it wrong. There will not be an Apple TV… rather there will be TV’s with Apple garnish.

  8. What if they make the iPad as large as a TV? I could go for that. Last year, naysayers were down on the iPad as just a bigger iPhone. They’ll come out and say the iTV is just a bigger iPad. Uh huh. And they’ll fail to see the potential and future apps (and revenue).
