Analyst cuts forecasts for Motorola on disappointing Xoom, Atrix sales

“Motorola Mobility isn’t seeing much love for its current cornerstone smart phone and tablet products, Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette asserts in a research note this morning,” Eric Savitz reports for Forbes.

“Faucette says channel checks find that sell-through trends for both the Xoom tablet and the Atrix smart phone… ‘have been disappointing,'” Savitz reports. “He says the Atrix in particular has been hurt by competition from the $49 price points for the Apple 3GS and the HTC Inspire, keeping sales ‘well below forecast.'”

Savitz reports, “The Pacific Crest analyst chops his 2011 revenue forecast for the company to $12.2 billion from $13.7 billion, cutting his profit projection to 64 cents, from 94 cents. For 2012, he goes to $13.6 billion and $1.10, from $15.3 billion, and $1.73. and he warns that there could be further downside risk to both 2011 and 2012 estimates unless the company can ‘quickly adjust and refresh its product portfolio’ for the 2011 second half and beyond.”

MacDailyNews Take: The market for pretend iPads and fake iPhones is tough, not to mention shameless and sleazy.

Fewer insipid, impact-free Super Bowl commercials and more at least some innovation, Sanjay. You know, before you’re next. 😉

    1. I can’t believe it doesn’t have Flash yet. I thought there was a “preparation” update that meant Flash was imminent a week after the Xoom was released? The Atrix looks stupid. At least they are trying to innovate. The problem is that an innovation has to actually produce something people want. What happens when you have your Atrix docked and you get a phone call?

  1. Like there’s any real doubt fake iPads and the like will be miserable sales wise. Maybe in a couple years once given the chance to mature and catch up with where Apple is today (who everyone forgets is a forward moving target). Still loving my iPad 1G, waiting to buy again the iPad 3 next year. May they figure out a way to give us a Retina Display type screen next year economically.

    1. I use my iPad 2 about 3x as much as I did my iPad 1. It’s unbelievable what a difference the cover, thinness/roundedness and a bit more snappiness make to its overall lovability. Before it was announced, I too thought retina resolution would be the be all end all feature. Now I never think about it.

    1. And rushed to market.

Honeycomb was not ready to come to the party. Which, IMHO, is 75% of the “disappointment” factor. Along with the lack of cornerstone tablet specific apps at launch time.

  2. “unless the company can ‘quickly adjust and refresh its product portfolio’ for the 2011 second half”

Like that’s gonna happen. Look what drivel they came out with since the industry’s “oh shit!” moment last January when the iPad was announced. It took them more than a year to come out with something that doesn’t even come close the iPad 1. Don’t even get me started on that glorified chocolate bar the Play Book.

  3. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the iHaters are right: it’s Mac vs PC again BUT not in how they understand it.

It’s Mac vs PC like how Apple Mac ate all the profits in the PC world.

We’ve just seen Acer fire it’s CEO. IBM PC division sold , Compaq sold, eMachines sold , Gateway sold, chunk of Sony Vaio outsourced to third parties, Dell shrunk to one tenth apple’s size with a tiny fraction of the profits while Apple mac is booming with 8 times PC sales growth, eating 30-40% of world PC profits.

To Henry Blodget and assorted iHaters : ‘who won the PC war again?’ After ‘winning’ the PC war Msft is now 100 billion bucks smaller than Apple.

Just like the iHaters were cheering PC market share ‘victory’ while profits evaporated, the Android fanbabies are doing the same now even as the Android makers stumble like inebriated donkeys into the profitless black hole – with razor margins, one mistake and you’re dead (heh dudes GIVING away smart phones in BOGO deals to get market share is exhilarating ain’t it.. lol)

  4. But Andy says “mkdir android ; cd android ; repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git ; repo sync ; make”

  5. Gonna be funny to read how the fandroids react to this latest bad news.
I did see that Staples featured the Xoom on the front page of their sales flyer this week. Their customers aren’t gonna be saying “That was easy” if they get suckered into buying one.
