Untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak released; Toyota’s Scion advertises on jailbroken iPhones

“The iOS Dev-Team on Monday released its latest hack to jailbreak iOS devices, with ‘PwnageTool 4.3’ and ‘redsn0w 0.9.6rc9’ both available for download,” Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider. “The ‘untethered’ jailbreak, which does not require a device to be connected to a computer via USB every time it restarts, works on the iPhone 3GS, GSM iPhone 4, third- and fourth-generation iPod touch, the first-generation iPad, and the second-generation Apple TV.”

“Jailbreaking is a process that allows users to run code and make changes to the iOS mobile operating system that are unauthorized by Apple,” Oliver reports. “One popular use is custom themes and skins that change the look and feel of an iPhone or iPad.”

Oliver reports, “One such skin was released last week for the first time by a major corporation: Toyota released a theme for its Scion 2011 vehicle in Cydia, an alternative application store available on jailbroken devices.”

  1. Apple needs to get their game on allowing users to customize the UI. Info on lock screen, what’s the big deal? Hopefully coming in 5.

I don’t care 4 that but many do. I jailbreak only to change sims as i travel a lot. Have hundreds of app, all paid 4.

  2. I have never jailbroken a device. And I am quite contented with the apps available on App store. But I get really agitated over the fact that I can’t unlock my iPhone. I travel out of the US at least a couple times per year. Last trip in February, I had to take along an unlocked Blackberry to insert a local sim while overseas. That way I could make local calls and have local callers call me while in that country. Unless I wanted to pay exorbitant roaming rates to AT&T, I had no choice.

That is the one thing about the iPhone that absolutely frustrates me.

    1. aTV(2) jailbreaking is an entirely different matter over iPhone jailbreaking. At this point, there’s no moral reason NOT to jailbreak your aTV, as there’s only advantages to doing so… creating an Apple TV that even Jobs would love to be able to sell – but cannot, due to agreements with studios/labels.

iPhone jailbreaking poses some moral/legal complications in the realm of piracy, even tho many do not.

  3. So does this mean there is an unlock out too or just jailbreak?
I am waiting on the unlock to come out. I already jailbroke mine. And yes i use it for themes. I get tired of not being able to change the look of my icons and so forth. I mean it was not long ago we couldnt even change the background from black. Maybe some day you will be able to submit themes for your iphone ipad to the App store.

I also like the fake app store or whatever you call it. NOt for stealing but like a trial period. I have found many apps that i got and would have cost money. Got them and after using it once or twice the app was not good and was deleted. When people steal thats one thing. When you jailbreak for using themes and or teathering and maybe trial apps i dont see an issue with it.

It would be great to offer 5 day trial on apps. 5 days is plenty of time to try it out and see if the app works. Sometimes an app has tons of praise but it still sucks
