Apple iPad 2 mania hits Australia and New Zealand; massive queues (with video)

“Judging from the early videos, iPad 2 mania may be even more fevered in Australia and New Zealand than it is in the U.S.,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

MacDailyNews Take: We have multiple reports from U.S. readers about lines for iPad 2 that exceeded 100 people in front of small and medium-sized Mall-bound Apple Retail Stores today or nearly two weeks after launch. We’d call that pretty fevered, but the Aussies are certainly having a fun time and giving the U.S. iPad 2 fans a run for their money.

P.E.D. continues, “The first customer in line at Apple’s Sydney store, seen here at right, camped out for 53 hours to buy his second iPad 2 (he picked one up two weeks ago in Boston.)”

Full article, with many more videos from around Austraila (Sydney, Brisbane, Doncaster and Chermside) here.

  1. There’s no doubt about it this ain’t no fad or FUD or vapor.

There’s only one iPad, actually 2, Apple changes the dynamics of computing again and again and again….

To the moon Apple, to the moon!

  2. At 1 am the online delivery time was less than a week…. About 8:30 it was 1-2 weeks… By 11:30 it was 3-4 weeks delivery….
But the cover has already been shipped 😎

  3. i was traveling yesterday. three of us in a row sitting in the terminal, two ipads, two macbook pros and three iphones. then on the plane, three of us in a row – two macbook pros, two ipads and two iphones.

  4. Where the heck happened to Scott Moritz after the introduction of the first when he called the iPad the “iFlop”, the failure that would completely embarrass Steve Jobs and Apple? Where are all those analysts that in 2009 forcefully stated that Apple would be put out of business by $250 Windows netbooks? Screw them… Screw them all. Steve is the man.

Dammit. Apple needs to bury those knuckleheads in iPad 2s for the rest of the year. It’s a darn shame that Foxconn can’t manufacture iPad 2s twice as fast. I want to see Steve Ballmer’s head spin as the iPad 2 decimates low-end Windows licenses.

  5. I amazes me just how good Apple is at presenting their products. I just watched samsung’s keynote for presenting their galaxy tab and it was SO painful and actually hilarious how bad the presentation was let alone the product. HIt the like for a good laugh.

    1. I think the world as we know it would implode if Apple made a presentation that corny. I can’t believe how much I have come to view “standard operating procedure” type presentations from Apple as what a presentation should look like. The stage presences looked so wooden and stiff, despite the appearance of much rehearsal that it made the whole thing feel forced and unnatural. Even if those people were “real” Galaxy Tab customers/users, they seemed like actors, though it’s actually pretty hard for a seasoned actor to look that excited and say, “Ooh! I’ll take THAT one!” quite as badly as these did. How can customers be fanatical about products by way of presentations like these? They may like the end product, but it won’t be because a presentation wowed them.e

    2. How many people are in the audience? I can’t here anyone clapping in this presentation. Apple’s announcement are so exciting and alive with activity. This sounds like a church funeral.

  6. I was at the Perth store. I would say that there were at least 1000 people queueing. That’s too long for me.
Afterwards I walked around the city(downtown to you Yanks) as people were finishing work. Invariably if someone was talking on a phone it was an iPhone. It is incredible.

  7. Even the people downunder who are technically upside down or rather walk the wrong side up know a good thing when they see one. It’s obvious to me that all that walking around upside down has not addled the brains of the average Aussie.

All I can say is good on yer mate, go on, have a Fosters on me. And go easy on the XXXX, don’t want to spill any of that amber nectar on your brand spanking new iPad 2 would you.

And oh, throw another shrimp on the barbie will you Bruce, there’s a good chap.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. Oi, oi, oi!

  8. Wait a minute. How can this be? Why, just yesterday I was reading an article by Katherine Noyes of PCWorld where she said that the iPad2 release “…made it clear that excitement with the devices is already fading.”

Maybe this is evidence of a parallel universe.

  9. EMBARRASING: Retailers in Berlin-Germany had only 4 to 30 iPad2 in stock!!! I think hundreds of Apple customer are very dissapointed today. iPad2 is really shipping in 2 or 3 weeks. What a psyco-marketing, Apple!
