“A source close to the M.T.A. has confirmed that [Apple] has backed out of plans to bring computers to commuters in an 16,000-square-foot store on the balconies of Grand Central’s main terminal,” Laura Kusisto reports for The Observer.
“The negotiations were always preliminary, as The Observer reported earlier, and appear to just have fallen through,” Kusisto reports.

Probably realized this was just not going to be a good PR move for them.
Each of the other NYC stores is an absolute “home run”, from all aspects. This was just not going to cut it, for so many reasons.
I would think it’d be more of a logistical problem than a PR problem. The Fifth Avenue store does need some sort of relief though and putting a store in midtown would have been pretty solid.
Whenever I need to get in and out quick, the Broadway store is an easy visit…just too far though if you’re walking from midtown.
There’s also a rumored rumor of another rumor being totally baseless and has therefore been rumored to be shelved until another rumor can claim otherwise.

DMac, your post is well timed. I was going to observe that both articles were great hit generators. What better way to look authoritative than to debunk your original rumor, than with another that says the first ain’t true.

Maybe it became apparent that having 1200 people line up for a product launch would be disruptive to the flow of commuters .

Honestly, the sarcastic tone of the article makes it seem false. And with Apple denying the existence of the iPad up until they announced it, I still hold out some hope. Still, I’ll believe it when I see it.

I just did a search for “Grand Central Terminal” in MDN – this article was listed as a “rumor” while the one saying plans were moving forward wasn’t. What does that tell you?
