iSuppli: iPad 2 glass, battery most at risk in aftermath of Japan disasters

“Industry research firm IHS iSuppli, which has been offering analysis of the construction of Apple‘s iPad 2 in recent days, this afternoon said that while many of the components in the iPad can be replaced with sources outside of Japan, the glass and the battery in the iPad may be more difficult to swap out,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s.

“The former may be sourced from Asahi Glass, which has reported damage to multiple facilities,” Ray reports. “Apple has not confirmed Asahi is the maker of the glass, but iSuppli speculates that Asahi is the provider based on inspection of the iPad’s screen.”

Ray reports, “The battery cells inside the battery pack appear to be made in Apple’s Japan subsidiary, even though the final battery pack is assembled in China.”

  1. Hey, MDN how about coming up with some real facts instead of republishing speculation and rumor. I don’t give creedance to any of this supply stuff yet. But what I do know is that apple sold 3X more IPad2’s than I’s on initial launch and they had to delay international launch of Ipad1 a month. With that much demand in US I would think the IPad2 Int. Launch will be delayed also and that will add fuel to the fire of supply problems next week.

  2. But there have been no announcements from Apple about any delays in the international launch, with the exception of Japan which is understandable in light of the tragedy that continues to unfold, and does not stem from shortages (although it may provide some small relief to the supply line).

  3. WTF?!? Apple has a Japan subsidiary that makes batteries?

As for the glass, I thought it had been determined that LG Display and Samsung made the glass for the first iPad.

  4. @dmac
it makes sense and japan makes it even more likely. IPad1 came out april 3 2010 int. launch was scheduled for late april. Mid april 2010 int. launch delayed until may 10 2010. With apple selling 3X more Ipad2’s at initial launch and japan havoc it’s a good bet the launch for the 25th will be delayed. Info is for traders.

  5. Here’s my takeaway from the article: “…iSuppli SPECULATES that…”

Conclusion: iSuppli arrived at its assertions by anatomic extraction. They do not really know for sure. But never let the facts stand in the way of a good old fashioned, click-whoring story. Such is what passes for journalism today.

Remember kids: if you want to get the chicks, it’s all about the clicks.

  6. Idiots and clueless talking heads, over $60,000,000,000 solves a lot of problems. Need to use a proprietary type of glass or material somewhere else. Ok, no problem. Buy the company for 50% more than it is worth and it is yours to do with where ever you want!

There may only be 5 total items with personnel or material sourcing / delivery issues. Are helicopters, small planes or boats expensive these days or something? With Apple’s hoard of cash in the bank, can you really see something that Apple can’t resolve?
