MacDailyNews Take: Morbid ineptitude. And those who feel compelled to mention Google Android-based tablets in the same breath as Apple’s iPad, as if they’re somehow equals, only make themselves look foolish and uninformed.
King and Bass continue, “Public testing of a new version of Windows will begin at the end of this year with partners and customers, said the people, who declined to be identified because the plans haven’t been disclosed publicly.”
MacDailyNews Take: Why bother? It won’t matter. And, by the way, Microsoft has had a “Windows for tablets” on the market for the last decade now. But, of course, without Apple showing them what to do, it was all wrong. So, now Microsoft is back at the copiers with iPads in hand. It’s too late already, dummies. Again. It’s iPod and Zune redux. Microsoft is a failure. They got lucky once with a bad Apple contract when Steve Jobs wasn’t there to mind the store that allowed them to copy the Mac OS forever. That luck is rapidly running out.
King and Bass report, “‘If 2011 is the year of the tablet wars, Microsoft will be awfully late suiting up for that battle,’ said Michael Gartenberg, a New Jersey-based analyst for research firm Gartner Inc. ‘It’s not a good position to be in.’ A 2012 debut for Microsoft would likely put it up against a third-generation iPad from Apple… Mark Martin, a spokesman for Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft, declined to comment.”
MacDailyNews Take: Mark probably didn’t decline to comment, he likely didn’t hear the question being too busy staring blankly at the wall of his cubicle or playing meaningless internal Microsoft politics, just like most Microsoft drones. Mark, the company your work for is failing. Microsoft is looking like they’re well on their way to becoming the Atari of 2020. Get out while the getting is still semi-good.

There’s speculation that the next generation of iPad might even make it before the end of this year (for the holiday season). On such a compressed schedule, Microsoft may end up competing against 4th gen iPad by the time they’re ready!!!
That a company with such massive resources and capacity to attract talent is so inept is simply mind boggling.

Agreed. But not only will the iPad 3 be out by then, it will have reached full production capability and marketing power. People won’t even notice that “Windows for tablets” is out.

Nice, MDN. So blinded by MAC’s shiny, overpriced and proprietary toys for smug elitists you fail to see the reality of Microsoft’s dominance and relevance. The IT guys where I work just informed me new Dell laptops are on the way for the accounting department, plus ultra-portable Dell tablets are being thrown in for the sales team. They call it the Streak. I’m sure the guys can’t wait to use and show off Microsoft-based tablets in the field. Next to a dumpy, still-can’t-get-it-right-on-the-third-try I-Pad these Windows tablets should be pretty slick.

Unfortunately they’ll be 30 months behind, iOs will be king, Android will be a healthy alternative and Microsoft, Palm and RIM will be fighting over the crumbs.
MS and Intel’s backwards (and I DO mean backwards) compatibility finally bit them in the proverbial behind.
With the iPod, I always felt that MS would have had a chance if someone with half-a-brain had been in charge.
But now, with the iPad, they are simply too far behind in every important facet of the product and the ecosystem.
I think Mr Balmer does have half a brain.

For some reason, Microsoft thinks it meeds to have a product in every market. They even made watches for a while. Now Microsoft is obsessed with producing a me-too product for everything Apple makes. There are two problems with that. The first problem is that a me-too product is always one generation behind, especially when you are copying a company that doesn’t divulge competitive information about its future plans. The second problem is that imitation is not just a form of flattery, it’s also a form of endorsement.
Why buy a Microsoft knock-off of Apple’s last-generation product when you can the current version of the real thing now?
How else will you get Entourage on a tablet?
Ironically, Apple will be the company that proves Bill Gates’ prognostication. Remember, Gates is the one that believed tablets were the future, he just needed Apple to show him what a tablet was.

That’ll work out great for Microsoft. Apple will be on their 3rd or 4th generation iPad by then. Microsoft will finally be ready to take credit for inventing the tablet PC market and be in a solid position to lead from three and-a-half years behind the rest of the industry.

There is nothing new here. This is NOT even “news.” This is the same Microsoft that has existed since the early 80’s. The only difference is that all you sheep are finally waking up and seeing Microsoft for what they really are…and what they’ve ALWAYS been: A derivative copy-cat!

I really don’t think Samsung and Microsoft and the others copy Apple. They really do their best to come up with something different and better than iPad. The problem is, they don’t understand the meaning of this last slide S. Jobs showed yesterday: intersection between technology and the humanities.
I have to say it. Careful what you wish for. Apple came late to mp3 players and smartphone. They did have predessessors in tablets too. So coming late to the party isn’t the killer.
Apple has mastered just enough. It isn’t in the Redmond DNA to follow KISS. Apple creates a post PC devices that sell computers. I expect MS to trip over trying to kill PC’s with their tablet. If they gain any traction at all it will be at the pain of their partners.
The only competive advantage I see them having is Office being part of the OS. They should be focusing on melding the iPad into the Windows experiance.

There is one product category M$ could enter where its products wouldn’t suck: If it started to copy Hoover vacuum cleaners!
When MS is testing a new Windows for tablets Apple will be releasing Lion. So they will be years behind on copying that too. HP has said that it will put WebOS in PC’s this year. The largest seller of MS products will be copying Apple’s “closed” system. Google may even have Chrome out this year. MS is going to be busy trying to enter the tablet market when their bread and butter is having first it’s real fight. WebOS will make people take a real look at what OS they need. Apple is now starting to take business customers seriously and HP has a large big business base. By 2012 the answer to “is a tablet a PC” question will be answered. If yes than Windows could easily be 60% of the market or less. MS will be going what the hell happened.
