“While rumors that Apple’s second-generation iPad due next week would include Retina Displays and SD card slots have long been refuted, one publication that originally made those claims has revised its predictions to say it no longer expects those features either,” Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider.
“Engadget on Thursday changed its predictions ahead of next week’s iPad 2 event, and said that ‘engineering issues’ led Apple to make last-minute design changes on the device,” Oliver reports. “‘It’s worth noting once again that these sources have been dead right on specific Apple plans and specifications for unannounced products in the past…,’ editor Joshua Topolsky wrote.”
“While it’s unclear how accurate that hypothesis is, AppleInsider confidently reported in January that the next-generation iPad would not have an SD card slot,” Oliver writes. “Similarly, AppleInsider also noted in January that there would not be a high-resolution Retina Display on the second-generation iPad. Apple has reportedly focused on making the new screen thinner and improving its anti-reflective properties…”

I never believed the retina display rumor. The total number of pixels woul be off the charts. Maybe next year we’ll all have the equivalent of a 30″ screen in our book bags.

Gruber put the smackdown on Engadget. And he was right to do so – it defies all logic to think that Apple made a change at the last minute for a production run of millions of devices. Either Engadget is very illogical, or they believe their readers are.
gruber is right. This is bull crap. There was never going to be a retina display so there couldn’t be a change due to anything. It’s just the desire to never to appear to be wrong.
Now with the new MBPs, use of SDxc, whatever those littler cards are called, now they’re hedging their bets.
Thanks for posting that. Engadget is usually good, certainly better than the bozos ate Jizzmodo, but this is just self aggrandizing delusion. “We posted rumours, they turn out to be bullshit, obviously Apple changed their plans and we are still right”.

Oh crap. I was hoping for a higher resolution display for the iPad 2. Come on Apple put a little pixel love for the iPad.
That ‘last minute engineering problem’ isn’t so last minute. Its been in the works since 2007. Its a little known thing you may not have heard of. Its called THUNDERBOLT. Rumor has it that it combines display port and PCI express into a dual channel 10gbps per channel connection that can bidirectionaly feed displays on one channel, and highspeed peripherals of every type on the other channel.
Why would anyone want an SD card when the iPad 2 will have bigger storage, more RAM, and the ability to plug into a 27″ display and high speed RAID array with a single connector?

I like sd cards the interface can be very simple, which makes them easy to use with small microcontrolers
but it is most certainly a small price to pay for thunderbolt!! 😀
Due to last minute engineering issues, the iPad 2 won’t have a floppy disc drive
For the majority, SD card slot = waste. It would go unused.
The small minority can buy an adapter.
I really hope thunderbolt is on the iPad 2. Lightning fast sync times would be appreciated!
