Fscklog has posted a photo of the box of the new 13″ MacBook Pro that Apple is planning to release on Thursday. Among the features shown is the name Apple will use for their Light Peak implementation: “Thunderbolt.”
Arnold Kim reports for MacRumors, “We’ve confirmed that these images are legitimate. This is of the low-end 13″ MacBook Pro, so it’s possible that the higher-end model will have different features.”

Is Thunderbolt really the best they could come up with? If true, sounds like a terrible name to me. I’ll be calling it Light Peak.
I was pulling for Gigawire myself.
You can call it dongle
Considering that there is no “light” (yet) in Light Peak, I am glad that Apple worked around that. Intel is already facing a bit of ridicule for launching LP with copper instead optics
Well if this is real I stand corrected. Didn’t think Lightpeak was ready for the mainstream. All the standard ports are still there.
Keeping the MiniDisplay form factor and compatibility on the Thunderbolt port means all of your $29 adapters will “just work” with the new technology. That’s really good news.
As soon as Thunderbolt to Firewire and USB adapters are available those ports will probably disappear too.
“Thunderbolt and lightning,
very, very frightening”
–Steve Ballmer
Ha ha, Ballmer, the “Queen” of the monkey boys.
And the fat-bottomed girls….
Oh my god, you said the word FAT!
I will roast in Hell now!
(probably with a honey glaze coating and a succulent Apple in my…..mouth)
You forgot the spit.
Hay, are you lamb basting me…?
I think he’s dry rubbing you…
You woundn’t prefer a pot roast would you?
If someone is going to rub me, they need to be Barbie cute…
“Thunderbolt and LightPeak,
Faster than the USB”
Galileo?
I wish this had a like button xD
I kind of like Thunderbolt. Of course, the mascot for my kid’s school is the Thunderbolts. Wait, didn’t HTC just come out with a Thunder Bolt knockoff of the iPhone?
Apple hopefully will have cables ready for the new i/o. Display port will work with this it seems and replaced the video port. So more accessibility. What if you want to connect two devices – video and a drive for example. Does this daisy chain?
Thunderbolt is okay for a name. Really depends if it becomes popular.
Relieved to see they made T-Bolt asymmetrical so you can tell at a glance which side is up. FW2 was not quite so easy to tell.
The picture of Thunderbolt looks fake!
Not to be an etymology douche, but thunder is the sonic component of lightning.
And what’s more likely: Apple kept the MiniDisplay port geometry so people could incorrectly jam their MDP cables into it, or some dickhead ‘shopped a *lightning* bolt over the MiniDisplay port icon?
I think the Thunderbolt moniker makes sense for the copper-based version of LightPeak. When the optical version comes out Apple can then call it Lightning(bolt).
Not to be a mythology douche (except maybe for Aphrodite…), but a ‘thunderbolt’ was a weapon used by Zeus and/or Jupiter to fell the mighty.
And Microsoft….
Remember when nobody liked iPad?
If the Thunderbolt don’t get you then the lLight Peak speed will.
Call it “Ali”. Fast and smooth. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.
it should be called fire-light (fire wire + light peak)
I can’t wait to get my hands one of these new macs, My Powerbook is becoming a pain to use and once they get the iPod touch sale going, I’ll be all set for my first year of college.
Call it ‘deadbolt’ if you have to buy another aftermarket cable to use it.
I went to http://www.cablestogo.com and searched for “thunderbolt” and received “Your search did not match any of the products we carry.” They have affordable cables of all types.
I like the name Thunderbolt, but why the need to be different? Light Peak works.
Keep it simple.
Apple’s implementation probably distinguishes it…
Hope there`s on option to upgrade the GPU. Intel graphics are on par with using a pencil and graph paper.
While I know Apple will use some nice, dedicated graphics on the 15″ and 17″ models… I’m not sure what’s going to happen on the 13″ model… Usually Apple does not let you specify your choice of GPU on macbook/ macbook pro models… so, dont get your hopes too high…
Actually, Sandy Bridge’s IGP is quite good. With Turbo mode on, it can increase performance quite a lot. I’d say it is just a bit under the 320M on stock settings, but with Turbo it matches it, maybe passing a bit. It also shares 128Mb more than the 320M…
… but still too little for a $1200 “Pro” notebook. Damn it, Apple, get that useless ODD out and give me MOAR POWA!
The screen resolution doesn’t sound right, given that the current 13″ MBA offers 1440×900 pixels.
LOSE THE GLOSSY. . . . PLEASE!!!
Get a matte screen cover.
Uh, yeah. Thunder is the sound of LIGHTening. So, um, in this case we get to hear the Thunderbolt first and see the LIGHTening afterward. So this is backwards day? Right? Did I answer correctly? This is giving me a headache.
😯
Not to worry.
The answer is in your history lessons.
