“As noted by Macerkopf.de, free access to the new iPad news publication The Daily has been extended beyond the original two-week trial period, pushing the free access window out to February 28th,” Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors.
“The change comes as we continue to await the public release of iOS 4.3, which will bring support for the in-app recurring subscriptions to be used by The Daily,” Slivka reports.

They had an update the other day, that said. ‘Delete the original app first’. So I deleted it and decided to NOT upgrade. Bye Bye The Daily.
Should be free till it stops crashing constantly.

Deleted it. Will try it again after they work out the kinks and improve the overall experience.
Agree with above. Crashes constantly, too frustrating to use. I will subscribe if they fix this and improve the download speed, jerky scrolling and some other UI issues, but for now it’s a beta app at best and really closer to an alpha. Latest version didn’t fix any of these things. Far from ready for prime time and paid subscriptions.
The new version has improved considerably from the launch version.
Those that followed the instructions and deleted then re-installed will find initial startup time has been reduced – not by a lot but it is better, and I have had none of the crashes that occurred when it was first released.
Love it, and want it to succeed.
Yeah this last update is horrible.
Crashes on me all the time, I’ll play with it as long as it’s free. When they charge, I’ll leave. Neat, but I’ll pass on the subscription.
I just deleted it. The mag didn’t live up to it’s hype. The news was minimal, the production value wanting, and the design tepid. The interface was derivative, not forward thinking. The only good thing I can say is that I didn’t find the bias I expected from a Murdoch entity: but that’s the easiest to “fix” of what I saw.
When newspapers decided to put their publication on the web they took 100 years of design and photo-use evolution and tossed it out the window. Deciding to go for the cookie cutter approach to web design (there’s a hole, just fill it with something) because it was cheeper.
The Daily was the first successful attempt at real design. Great use of design and photos in a way that leads you into the story. I found it and easy to read, once you took the initial effort to learn how it works.
Project Magizine (the one with Jeff Bridges on the cover) was an attempt, but not a successful one.
Yes, the app is a little buggy, but it’s still free.
I’ll keep reading, and I’ll pay for it once the app bugs are fixed.

The worst thing about The Daily (aside from the sluggishness and crashing) is that it “downloads the issue”, and makes you page through it.
I mean, can’t we all agree that the incremental downloads and scrolling of the web are a smashing success? Why did they choose to go backwards? It is not better in any way than a website.
One thing they need…
Ability to view back issues.
Saved stories, while nice is weak.
If i was unable to view yesterday’s “daily” I can never see it.
I liked the daily’s idea though, much different than the simple newspaper app’s that just show the mobile web version of it’s paper.
A+ for effort, D for stability right now. C for content.
If it were free, I’d keep it for sure. .99 a week… Pass, at least for now anyway.
First BestBuy extends buy back on tablets, The Daily extends free trial period, and iPad accessories are be sold 50% off at some retailers. Sounds like iPad 2 by the end of Febuary boys and girls.
The cameras will be enough to earn my money but I’m curious to see what else they include.
I deleted The Daily enthusiasm. I’m now now using the substantially more amazing Flipboard for news. It’s free.

No, if you read the Los Angeles Daily News or the Long Beach Press-Telegram, for example, using their load on demand version of the newspaper (a paid service) you may find it frustrating. Having to wait each time I turn (or try to turn) the page, pauses when the server doesn’t respond, and the need to be connected every time I just turn the page is enough to see that that just doesn’t work.
Just let me open The Daily, put it down for a minute, and then pick it up and go to where ever I want. THAT is the way to go!
