Chances are “high” that Apple will deploy dual-core processors in iPhone “soon,” say DigiTimes sources.
“The requirement for stronger capability to manage multimedia functionality including 3D games and HD video has pushed handset vendors to develop dual-core processors, the sources asserted,” Daniel Shen and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes. “Nvidia’s dual-core platforms have been adopted by LGE, Motorola and Dell, while Samsung’s devices have gained support from Apple in addition to being used in-house.”
The Shens report, “Sales of multi-core smartphones will account for 15% of global handset shipments in 2011 with the ratio likely to climb to 45% in 2015, according to an estimate by Strategy Analytics.”

This will happen for iPhone 5 guaranteed!
If so (and probably will), count me in and i’ll pull the trigger on iPhone 5 ( still on 3G ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” /> )
Geeks have orgasm … No one else notices or cares.
@Non-Geeks,
If that were true, non-geeks couldn’t breed.
Take this with a grain of salt: DigiTimes doesn’t exactly have a stellar rumor mill record.
Dual processor? I can’t wait till Maya is ported to iPhone.
Digitimes seems to have a direct line into Cupertino.
Maybe we’ll be able to run Window Phone 7 in a virtual environment!
Just kidding.
An Apple A5 based upon an Arm multicore A9 seems pretty obvious.
“The requirement for stronger capability to manage multimedia functionality including 3D games and HD video “
Are they saying the current Apple products are “struggling” with these features?
As they suggest, it may happen (ok, “will” eventually), but nothing trumps battery life; NOTHING. So if (when) Apple can put those two together (and make a nice profit at it) it will happen. Not before.
Specs don’t mean everything, but Apple has worked hard to keep the iPod, iPhone, and iPad ahead of the spec curve.
Hmmm…..for some reason I want sausage.
if you’re reading this website, then you’re a Geek!
With the increased energy requirements, solar- assisted battery capability for the upcoming iPhone would be amazing.
And what will the impact be on battery life?
It is a sure bet it will happen. I think there is a couple of Android phones out there on Sprint’s Network. Apple has to do this to be competitive. Most likely iPad 2 will get it first to stay ahead of the other competitors.
I believe dual core would be ok, but I don’t understand anything of it, I am a user, so I want it to be fast.
As a user my wish is this:
MAKE THE IPHONE 5 WATERPROOF!
Now that would be cool, like the Kodak Zx3 Playsport camcorder. Would be very useful too, for a phone. And then, I imagine Steve Jobs at the presentation dropping it into his glass of water. He would be back and fine…
@3D
I like autodesk, but not maya :/
just give me a nice procedural ray tracer (povray anyone? of course, they screwed up there licensee so no ipov :/) and good scripting language (applescript!!)
oh, and opencl would be nice!! 😀 then the ray tracer i wrote for the mac would run on the iphone!! 😀
