RUMOR: Next-gen iPad, iPhone Apple TV to sport new Apple custom CPU, ultrafast dual-core graphics

ZaggMate“Apple’s next generation iPad and iPhone, both due the first half of this year, will pack a new version of the company’s custom A4 chip, with dual, faster graphics cores capable of supporting a Retina Display iPad and potentially bringing 1080p HD support to iOS devices, including Apple TV,” Daniel Eran Dilger reports for AppleInsider.

“Later this year, Apple will introduce its second generation iPad, reportedly with double the resolution and four times the pixels to process. That type of display upgrade would necessitate a big boost in graphics and video processing power,” Dilger reports. “The same source behind’s AppleInsider’s coverage of the secret licensing deal that occurred between Apple, Imagination Technologies and Samsung beginning back in 2008, and resulting in the new chips that powered the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, is now indicating what can be expected from Apple’s A4 replacement.”

Dilger reports, “Apple’s next custom System on a Chip is expected to jump from the SGX535 (which has been used since the iPhone 3GS) to the new SGX543 graphics and video core, which is said to offer around twice the processing power at the same clock speed. The new graphics core also supports OpenCL, used to offload general purpose computing tasks on the GPU for fast execution.”

MacDailyNews Take: Bring ’em on!

  1. For a while it was looking like I might hold onto my iPad for another generation. But the rumored Retina Display and dual core graphics are just what the doctor ordered to get me to upgrade.

Really though, despite the neat new specs and all, the 1stGen iPad will remain a sweet machine for some time to come. I’d be perfectly fine with it.

  2. Its all nothing but an exercise in mental mast….you know….until apple officially releases the specs.

It had better be a hell of a machine for me to drop the money on an ipad again.

  3. iPad has changed the way I consume media so much that I plan to always buy each new top of the line iPad as they are released while not buying new Macs until a new Mac OS won’t work well on the 2008 models I have but seldom use for anything but iTunes.

  4. “Whatever goodness iPad 2 brings with it, it can’t come soon enough for me.”

    Same here.
My only dilema… Wifi and use my iPhone to hotspot, or 3g and swap my iPhone sim when needed…

Leaning for wifi. (just get more capacity) only times i’m away from wifi really, is in the car… or at work. where i cant have the iPad there anyway.

  5. Stereo speakers please !! The audio quality is great but its huge disappointment that they aren’t stereo when in landscape mode. And FCOL add a bloody USB port !

Also, move the headphone jack ! Its in the way when playing games in landscape mode, and if you turn it upside down then the off button is prone to be pressed unintentionally.
