“A man from Hampshire has thanked binmen for rummaging through tonnes of rubbish to find his £500 iPhone after his partner threw it away by mistake,” BBC News reports.
“Rob Wright quickly contacted Fareham council after the bin was emptied from his home in Beacon Way, Park Gate,” The Beeb reports. “The authority put him in contact with its contractors and the lorry was diverted to be sorted by hand.”
The Beeb reports, “Staff picked through about seven tonnes of recycling before they found the phone, which still worked.”

MacDailyNews Take: Something about this story stinks.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Macintosher” for the heads up.]
Bloody ‘ell!!!
Would a mobile phone owner go to these lengths for a BlackBerry?
That MacDailyNews Take was rubbish.
His wife found out that he was misusing the ‘Find my mistress’ app on his iPhone.
Instead of sifting through 7 tonnes of rubbish, why didn’t they call the mobile?
The term “binmen” has a certain air about it — sort of like “G-men” but earthier.
Was it Friday? Cause then this story would have smelled fishy.
“Something about this story stinks.”
It is the lorry.
Ew.. Imagine holding that up to your face afterwards.
Hard to imagine anyone going to these lengths to recover a Blackberry or a Windows Phone 7. Most people would probably just let it rot.
” ‘oney, I tossed yer Thingy in the rubbish”
” Blimey then, call the Binmen right off”
” Found it did you, used TrashTime ‘eh”
TrashTime, free with MobileMe.
Hope he did more than merely thank them. Stumping up for a few beers for these heroic characters would have been nice.
Searching through seven tonnes? I hope Wright rewarded them somehow. For you American readers, “binmen”, and “lorry”, is British for “garbage men”, and “truck”, respectively. GBP 500 for an iPhone sounds steep, but when you work it out, it’s about right, which would probably make it the 16 GB model.
Geez, I thought they spoke (wrote) English over there?
Pip pip old chip!
“binmen” and “lorry” sound so much more civilized, though. I believe I shall start calling my garbage men binmen. They’d rather enjoy that, I think.
Q: Where’s ya bin?
A: I’ve been in …
Q: No. Where’s ya wheelie bin?
A: Oh, I’ve really been in…
What happens with Blackberry & Apple? This is funny:
Nothing like kicking up a stink…
A pleasure to find this for you, MDN.
