“Verizon Wireless on Friday sent an invitation to select press to attend a special event on January 11, 2011,” Jim Dalrymple reports for The Loop.
Dalrymple writes, “While it doesn’t mention anything about Apple this could be the Verizon iPhone.”

Jennifer Valentino-DeVries reminds and opines for The Wall Street Journal, “Verizon doesn’t have a lot of fancy events. And it’s a little odd to be holding an invitation-only press conference a few days after the wireless carrier could have made almost any announcement it wanted to a huge audience at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We say ‘almost,’ because there’s one announcement Verizon couldn’t make at CES: an iPhone running on its network.”

MacDailyNews Take: 1-11-11 @ 11. Sooo, whaddya think? Are Verizon customers soon going to be able to “rule the air” with the real thing or did Lowell just rent out Lincoln Center so he can unveil yet another pretend iPhone?

Naw…it’s the new princess phone
That’s it ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
Hoo Ha!!!
1/11/11
watch it be honeycomb tablet with LTE. Verizon is the place for new Android Devices too. It’s all to maybe counter Apple. 3 years of heartbreak, I’ll believe when it is done and said. And this is a Verizon event, not an Apple event.
You guys are foolish to think that Verizon and Apple are announcing the new iphone. Anybody with 1/2 a brain would see it’s an announcement that iTunes is finally getting The Beatles.
Not only that Verizon and Apple are sponsoring the reunion of the The Fab Two at WozFest 2011.
Verizon is buying Time Warner! And Adobe!
Anyone seriously think that Apple would let Verizon steal their thunder on the announcement?
Hmmmm….
It also could be the announcement that Verizon is buying Apple. I always thought Apple would be a great acquisition to Verizon’s robust portfolio.
That huge pot of crow I’ve got cooking on the stove is almost done. A few of you better grab some plates and set the table.
The day is near. The Verizon iPhone is upon us.
See? Jobs is okay with Verizon making an announcement. He just insisted they not do it at CES, otherwise known as the pointless, Apple-hating, microsoft circle-jerk.
@Shaun,
How will they steal Apple’s thunder when Steve will be on stage at the event?
Can you hear me now … saying I want one?
There would be many incontinent people if Verizon catered entertainment from Cupertino.
@R2:
Crow Mignon?
While I find it hard to believe that an Apple product would be unveiled at a non-Apple event, it has happened before. And like this case, the Apple product in question wasn’t new, it was just a new company selling the product.
Anyone remember Carly Fiorina’s introduction of the “Apple iPod by HP”?
Of course, that didn’t work out so well.

They should have taken it all the way and made it at 11:11: am
@ Shaun
> Anyone seriously think that Apple would let Verizon steal their thunder on the announcement?
In this case, I think Apple WOULD let Verizon handle announcement of a Verizon iPhone. If Apple itself made a huge deal about it, that would be an insult to all the worldwide iPhone carriers, especially ATT… all those providers who are already collectively selling iPhone 4 as fast as Apple makes them. It would be like saying, “Thanks for helping make iPhone 4 the best selling consumer electronics product in history, but now you all take a back seat to Verizon.”
Also, letting Verizon handle a splashy announcement would highlight how important getting iPhone is to Verizon, NOT how important gaining Verizon as a provider is to Apple. Apple should act like it’s just another carrier offering iPhone.
But I think January 11th is still a bit too early. If it was January 11th, Verizon might was well have used CES to make the announcement less than one week earlier. And whenever it happens, Verizon may be handling the announcement, but I’m sure Apple carefully specified what Verizon was allowed to say and do regarding iPhone.
@R2
That’s OK. You were right for a couple of years! Don’t feel bad…
Has Verizon ever held a “special event” on a large scale before? If not why now? If so what did they unveil in the past?
Hey, folks,
Watch our for fleas. I think they’re about to start fartin’.
Apple does not announce releases to an additional carrier other than thru a press release. They only do a grand event for a new release. Availability of a new carrier is no big deal. When they announced the iPad on VZ, it was by press release.
Apple probably did step backward and is allowing VZ to have a shindig of it’s own. Maybe Steve shows up, but most probably Oppenheimer will bebthere.
Is it just me or anyone else think the vz iphone will have some extras like what the 3gs was to the 3g? I would be surprised if its exactly the same phone .. not that i think the i4 needs an upgrade, just wondering.
This event will start with the Verizon CEO and Jobs entering from opposite ends of the stage and meeting/shaking hands in the middle. Then, the announcement of the iPhone on Verizon!
(At least, that’s the way it SHOULD happen.)
WTF would a keynote from apple say? Hey, look there’s misspelt “version” in the top corner where once was at &t?
For apple there’s nothing to announce. For version, there’s another million customers to say hello to.
