Electronista reports, “HP is sending out press invitations to a special webOS event on February 9th, reports say. The event will take place in San Francisco, and is being advertised with the slogan ‘Think big. Think small. Think beyond.'”
MacDailyNews Take: Too easy.
Electronista reports, “Notably missing from the invitation graphic is Palm, which was bought by HP and originally created webOS; HP may be phasing out the Palm name.”
MacDailyNews Take: Defunct.
Electronista reports, “The event is expected to feature at least one phone, and perhaps more significantly the first-ever webOS tablet in the form of the [10-inch] Topaz.”

MacDailyNews Take: Because the world is crying out — crying out, we tell you! — for yet another pretend iPad without a third-party ecosystem from a printer company. And webOS hasn’t failed enough times already.
34 days for target practice for MDN posters. Way too easy.
WebOS is perfect for a tablet. Better than iOS. Problem with it though is not many apps. But if it takes off, that will change.
All the iPad is is a giant iPod Touch. I like it, and I like the bigger screen for web browsing, some games, and a few apps. But the operating system is identical to the iPhone’s. No differentiation. The WebOS is much better suited for a larger slate-device.
Apple needs to differentiate iOS a bit more for its tablet. For example, why not allow widgets on the iPad? Imagine, 6 or 7 widgets all running on the same screen at one time. Stock ticker, Twitter feed, weather widget, etc. Android already does this, and it works great on the Galaxy Tab.
We get none of this from Apple. Look to Android and WebOS to be Apple’s competitors this year.
@asdf,
Apple is Apple’s main competitor.
@asdf
Sure, why don’t you call Jobs and tell him how to run his business because unlike you, he doesn’t seem to have a clue.
Reverse Polish web browsing?
Android is like the carnival blowing into town. Cheap cacophony.
No thanks. One action at a time done well. Just like a clear-headed thinker.
Why didn’t these asswipes just go ahead and call their even Think Different and openly steal Apple’s slogan. It gets more and more embarrassing.
@asdf…
I call astroturfing on ya… how exactly is WebOS perfect for a tablet, and how do you know about a product that hasn’t been introduced yet?
iPhone & iPad have the best OS for small product form factors… that’s why others attempt to copy Apple and not the other way around.
@Monger – LOL. I still have my HP-11C from my college days, bought it used from someone who wanted to upgrade to a graphing calculator – still works; the 11C was/is a great little device. Very well built.
Peace.

I see 2 issues with this statement.
First, the iPad and the iPhone have discrete versions of iOS, customized for each device and their respective specs.
Second, please explain how WebOS is better suited for a tablet.
Nice timing HP. It had to be just barely early enough so that whatever gets announced is not made obsolete by iPad 2.0. Yet it is probably not an “available today” announcement, so whatever is announced WILL be obsolete by the time it IS available.
Actually, anything in the pipeline from Apple’s competition is already mostly obsolete compared to iPad 1.0, so I guess it really doesn’t matter too much… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Kinda reminds me Palm releasing the Pre just a few DAYS before Apple released iPhone 3GS, while also keeping the previous iPhone model in the lineup at $99. Made obsolete AND over-priced over a weekend. HP picks up where Palm left off.
And on February 18th Apple announces earnings and maybe Verizon intentions, if not sooner…
“All the iPad is is a giant iPod Touch.”
Get it right.. The iPhone and iPod touch are nothing but small iPads!
Oh yeah …
” Android already does this, and it works great on the Galaxy Tab.”
And we all know how things are going for Androne Tablets (talk about something being nothing more than a giant phone).
‘Think big. Think small. Think beyond.’
Why did HP not use, “Think Different” ?
Did someone else already use that?
Who could it have been, that one who came first, and used the best slogan before anyone else?
“Who?! Who?! Who could it have been?!”, I ask.
I hope the instructions for using the devises are better than with their printers where the English is no more comprehensible than the 38 other languages they provided. Thankfully I just guessed what I had to do from the Klingon versions and finally got it to work on my wireless network.
Oh boy, and it’s only, like, a few years behind and they’re starting over from scratch. Way to go H-P.
I am so freaking excited. I am going to wet myself.
Make that January 18th…
an ipad is nothing like an ipod touch
only people who havent used one would say such a thing
HPalm: “because we cannot think of a better way to compete than to copy everything Apple does. Since the rumors is Apple will announce something before 2/14, we will stage our event as late as possible so not be be trumped by the Apple event.”
Next thing you know a HP store will be opening near Union Square, with lots of glass, sales staff in colorful T-shirts, and a Hands-On Bar…
I, for one, am incensed at MDN’s assessment of HP as a Printer Company.
Everyone on Earth over 40 knows HP is a Pocket Calculator Company.
“HP to make ‘exciting’ webOS announcement on February 9th”
Apple to make announcements whenever they damn well please and we all know they will be exciting.
If an iPad is like an iPod touch or iPhone then howcis a android tab any different?
I love my iPad 64 GB 3G and will buy the iPad 2 as soon as it is released, but I would like to be able to have access to widgets on the home screen. At least I think I do…
