Logitech suspends production of Google TV ‘Revue’ boxen

Apple Online Store“Logitech has reportedly informed Gigabyte Technology to temporarily suspend shipments of Revue set-top boxes (STBs) for the period from December 2010 to January 2011 waiting for Google to complete updates or to launch a new version of its software for Google TV, according to industry sources,” Monica Chen and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.

Chen and Shen report, “Component suppliers in Taiwan expect Google to unveil Android 3.0 in the second half of February or March 2011 at the earliest, and related supporting suppliers will then resume shipments.”

MacDailyNews Take: Aw, Logitech’s Revue is pending review. Whoever could’ve seen this coming (besides everyone on the planet with an IQ above 70)?

On October 6, 2010, on the occasion of Logitch’s Revue launch, we wrote: “Steve Jobs is laughing his ass off right about now. This thing is far, far too complicated for 99% of the market and the prices are insane – in a bad way. It has a keyboard, an effing keyboard! At first, we thought it was all a joke. Then we began to feel sorry for the people at Logitech who wasted their time on this thing. Of course, some percentage of well-heeled geeks will get all excited. Too bad for Google and Logitech there are nowhere near enough of them to matter. Not even remotely close. Seriously, the vast majority of the world can barely switch inputs on their TVs to see the cable box, DVD player, etc. Frankly, we’re a bit stunned at the cluelessness of it all. This thing is DOA.”

  1. Forgive me a cruel chuckle, heh heh.

Apple’s competition foolishly fails to hear the clarion call for simplicity. Simplicity = success. Who ever said anyway things need to be needlessly complex? Shows a distinct lack of imagination of engineers, CEO’s and marketing departments. May their cluelessness shoot them down in flames every time.

  2. MDN,
“Seriously, the vast majority of the world can barely switch inputs on their TVs to see the cable box, DVD player, etc. Frankly, we’re a bit stunned at the cluelessness of it all.”

So true and so scary. And yes, many of todays youth are better at technology…. only cause the gaming industry made them learn. 🙁

  3. @ Peter Blood

You’re right on. Here in my small town, people know that I have an above average tech background. I get a lot of people asking me for advice. Lately, lots of people are buying iPads (an amazing number) and I’ve had three people come to me and ask if I’d help “set it up” for them out of the box.

I enjoy that, so I say sure. Every single one of them at the end is like, “I could have done that myself!”

My reply is simple: “That’s because every other piece of tech you ever owned made you feel stupid and you expect it to be hard. Welcome to Apple.”

  4. The ease of the Apple TV setup is scary simple. It took me less than 5 minutes and I was watching Netflix, YouTube, photos, music, movies from my iMac. Not one hiccup… Again I say to Google…. It’s the software you idiots.

  5. I’m with Peter Blood. When someone asks me for
buying advice, I have only two words: “Buy Apple”.
Switched from MS Windows and Gateway some
6yrs ago and never looked back. Everything works
    and couldn’t be happier.

  6. This is a plus for Google.
By suspending production, they have lessened the chance that more people will find out how bad it sucks….(not by much, though) ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  7. $600 with accessories and what looks like 500 buttons on the remote, you’d have to be a scientist to afford and figure out Logitech’s Google TV. Apparently according to this article the software also sucked!
    Not surprised myself though.

  8. The release of Android 3.0 is not going to change the basic conceptual flaws of Google TV.

It’s too complex for a living room entertainment device. Even “well-heeled geeks” don’t want this thing, because if they wanted their TV to be a computer, they would just connect a REAL computer.

Apple TV is simple and affordable. It works with a remote that has about half a dozen buttons. Once there are enough millions of devices out there connected to TVs, Apple will negotiate for more new content (in a stronger bargaining position), and turn ON new services and features. Steve Jobs will keep calling it a “hobby” until, one day, it is not…

  9. What did I count? Something like 57 buttons on the frickin’ keyboard? Who’d have thought Google would be so nostalgic as to bring back User Hostility?

Is GoogleTV the biggest Google-FAIL ever?

Come on Google trolls! Defend this loser POS! I dare you!

  10. This product was DOA right from the beginning. They were going for too much at the beginning. That is what made it complicated. Apple went the simple route. That is what made the ATV a winner.
