Obama: Americans should expect a person like Steve Jobs to be rich

Apple Online Store“President Obama today cited Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ product success as an example of a person who Americans should ‘expect to be rich’ as an incentive for others,” Brooke Crothers reports for CNET.

Crothers reports, “Responding to a reporter’s question, the president prefaced his comments about Steve Jobs and Apple by saying, ‘What is…a fact is that people in the top 1 percent, people in the top one-tenth of 1 percent, or one-hundredth of 1 percent have a larger share of income and wealth than any time since the 1920s… Which segued into the comments about Apple. ‘And something that’s always been the greatest strength of America is a thriving, booming middle class, where everybody has got a shot at the American dream. And that should be our goal. That should be what we’re focused on. How are we creating opportunity for everybody? So that we celebrate wealth. We celebrate somebody like a Steve Jobs, who has created two or three different revolutionary products. We expect that person to be rich, and that’s a good thing. We want that incentive. That’s part of the free market,’ he said.”

  1. The Empty Suit continued:

And, if you ever do get “rich,” I want it all to waste on total bullshit… uh, uh, I mean “to spread the wealth.”

And, then wait until you die – your life’s work to Uncle Sam, not to your family.

Because I don’t understand basic business concepts – I’m a fscking community organizer, after all… You know, I’m just, uh, feeling my way around here as the Republicans teach me how to get the U.S. economy that I’ve been killing for 2 years now running again.

Bear with me, I’m learning on the job, just as McCain warned you I would be.

Hope Iran and North Korea don’t blow up. Maybe I should go over there and bow before them and apologize again for the greatest country on earth?

  2. For a “change,” how about doing something real like enforcing the law and securing our borders instead of babbling obviousness that even your vacuous supporters understand implicitly?

STOP SPENDING OUR GREAT GRANDCHILDREN’S MONEY, YOU BLATANTLY UNPREPARED FOOL!

  3. It sure would be a boost to humanity is MDN would screen posts in the name of basic human decency. Just because the first amendment allows a person to say whatever they want, it does not guaranty the privilege for it to be published. That’s why FOX News exists.

  4. Just a reminder to all the wingNuts that take every opportunity to bash the other side with their self righteous club, it was your guy as President and your Congress that fsked things up so royaly for the 98% of us.

Selective amnesia is your best friend.

Question: Most of you supporting policies to give welfare to the wealthy, that 1% of the population that controls 93% of the nation’s wealth, vote against your own fsking interest. WTF?

  5. Funny how so many people are critical of Obama when it was the Republicans who put us into debt. Most of the debt under Obama’s watch comes from the administration that proceed his. Not to mention the the former President could even speak English properly.

Republicans have mastered the art of misdirection. Two wars, tax cuts, big entitlement drug program for seniors and one wonders where all the money went. did anyone think those things were paid for, no, the costs rolled over and this administration got the blame.

As for spreading the wealth, funny how Obama only want to tax the rich, not the middle class or poor, you know, the other 97% of us. In the end the country cannot thrive unless the middle class has the bulk of the wealth to spend, to make those 3% rich. Does it really matter if they have millions, instead of billions, no. Sure they can create jobs, but so can the middle class with cash in hand to spend and grow the economy. Funny how we thrived during the post-war 40’s and 50’s when the rich were taxed 90% of their earning, so much for the Republican propaganda on taxing the rich.

Iran and North Korea are only threats to themselves. They’d never use nukes unless it was in defense. North Korea doesn’t wipe it’s ass without China’s permission and Iran knows it would be bombed back into the stone age if a nuke were traced back to them. Neither of these regimes are suicidal, they are survivalists, like Cuba’s Castro. Either country with nukes is no more a threat than Russia with nukes and funny, we’re all still here.

  6. The problem isn’t that the rich are rich, it’s that there is little class mobility. What wasn’t mentioned is that Steve didn’t start out rich.

And Steve is hardly the richest or close to being the richest in America. Obama is lucky he didn’t get asked about Gates, because then the rich don’t deserve to be rich based upon ill-gotten gains.

  7. More to the point than all of this pointless political crap:

May God bless Steve Jobs!! This man is a true American hero and deserves every penny he EARNS.

As for the political rhetoric: great job everyone. I am sure you converted 100% of the readers to your point of view with your arrogant banter. It is not necessary to spew your beliefs everytime Obama’s (anyone else’s) name is mentioned. Nor is it necessary to fight back. Show some class. I didn’t vote for him either. But, belittling another’s belief’s is not helping your cause. There are smart people on both sides. A little respect could go a long way.

  8. Notice that the U.S. states that are failing are Democrat, heavily unionized, and generally vote Democrat?

All the while the Republican states continue to grow, amassing more and more electoral votes along the way.

Why do poor people continue to vote for Democrats who have been providing them with nothing more than subsistence living for 50+ years? Is the government cheese that good?

What a horrible way to live, being dependent on the government that confiscates too much from productive citizens.

The Republican ideas at least hold the possiblility for a better life. The Democrat way is to keep you down and keep you voting for your shitty gov’t check.

I feel sad for 95% of the U.S. black people who keep voting themselves into slavery. It’s sad.

You can do it, if you get out there and take advantage of all of the possibilities the still great U.S. offers, but you have to actually work for it.

  9. @TechSupport, @James:

THANK YOU! After all the right wing whining on this topic, it’s nice to see a couple of people who use their heads and put the situation into perspective.

It’s unfortunate that most people that experience misfortune want to place the blame on everyone but themselves.
