Apple patent application details ‘logo antenna’ for MacBooks, iOS and other devices

Apple Online StoreApple’s engineers have been working “on a new kind of antenna which Apple dubs the ‘logo antenna,'” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

“This new antenna is to hide behind the famous Apple logo thereby allowing it to gain a stronger signals without intervening metal or other conductive housing walls interfering,” Purcher reports. “It’s interesting to note that this is Apple’s third telephonic Macbook related patent in the second half of 2010 and would all but confirm this is a definite trend Apple is focused on.”

Purcher reports, “And lastly, it should be noted that Apple foresees the logo antenna working itself down into miniatures and wearables such as wrist watches and pendants.”

  1. Erm… Well if you look at the specs for the iMacs, you’ll see that the wifi antenna is behind the logo as it’s the only piece of non metal on the back…

    But it’s a good idea, as plastic isn’t as susceptible to metal in conducting/ merging signals… Shouldn’t be too much of an issue with holding it “wrong”…

    Yeah;
    And am I crazy, or isn’t this the case with the iPad as well?
    So how is this “a new kind of antenna”?

  3. It’s new in its application if you follow the patent. The emphasis in the patent is like the cover graphic of the patently report. It’s the MacBook and iPhone. The inventors of this patent also have worked on other Apple patents on working telephony into the MacBook lineup which it doesn’t today. The patent points to the iPhone as one new candidate, the MacBook but also future miniature products yet to surface. The fact that the iPad only came out this year, proves that the patent has punch. If it’s already beginning to rollout, what’s next for this style of antenna?

    Apple always has something new cooking. That’s what I love about Apple.
