Gmail creator: ‘Google’s ChromeOS will be killed next year (or ‘merged’ with Android)’

Robin Wauters reports for TechCrunch, “Former Googler, FriendFeed founder and Facebook-er turned investor Paul Buchheit just tweeted this zinger: ‘Prediction: ChromeOS will be killed next year (or ‘merged’ with Android).'”

Wauters reports, “More from Buchheit in the FriendFeed thread: ‘ChromeOS has no purpose that isn’t better served by Android (perhaps with a few mods to support a non-touch display). I was thinking, ‘is this too obvious to even state?’, but then I see people taking ChromeOS seriously, and Google is even shipping devices for some reason.'”

MacDailyNews Take: The purpose of ChromeOS is the same as all of Google’s stuff: Get people (hardware makers and consumers) hooked on half-baked, perpetual beta jackassery by positioning it as the “alternative” to Apple’s more polished offerings in order to keep as many eyeballs as possible on Google-served ads. Period.

  1. The main problem with Microsoft and Google’s followers is that they are happy if they are allow to do what ever they want even if they can’t or never get to do anything because that “freedom” came at a very high price.. beta software for life and waiting for apple to came out with the real innovations.

Apple user’s are happy getting things done, not just watching hardware specs passing by.

  2. Scary!!

I had something happen yesterday. I have my snowmobile for sale. I got an inquiry via email. I always use Gmail for this kind of stuff because I don’t want to use my other emails addresses for potential spam. I opened gmail via chrome and was blown away by the fact that the gmail interface was surrounded by ads for snowmobiles, rental of snowmobiles, accessories for snowmobiles. Basically, Google read my personal email and based on the content used it as marketing revenue. People need to wake up and be very afraid of Google. If they think there is a single thing they are doing to protect you or your data you are in your own personal distortion field.

I am happy to pay for mobile me so I never have to think about my personal information being data mined for profit without my consent. Ah, the magic word. That is what people just simply click through to get to the install screen. Nobody ever reads the actual fine print.

  3. My take is the opposite – Chrome OS is a hedge against Android losing the Oracle lawsuit. By implementing the “OS” using nothing but open web standards, combined with the Web App store they’ve recently opened, they’re laying the groundwork for moving away from Android in the long term.

  4. @Macrofls,

We buy excellent, well integrated hardware from the best software company on the planet.

You buy crappy hardware that half-ass-idly runs crappy software and Steve Jobs is taking advantage of us?

WTF! Pull your head out of your ass before you suffocate.

  5. Jeezus! Are you guys serious? Mac guys don’t like competing operating systems? I’m stunned.

How about idiots whom pay 3 times too much for pedestrian hardware that runs about 20 percent of available software.

Those are the guys who you should be griping about.
