HTC parrots Apple in HD7 ‘death grip’ defense

“Using language reminiscent of Apple’s stance on the iPhone 4 antenna problem, Taiwanese handset maker HTC issued a statement Thursday defending its Windows Phone 7 HD7 smartphone from criticisms that it suffers from weakened signal strength when gripped,” Josh Ong reports for AppleInsider. “HTC published the statement in response to YouTube videos that depict the newly released HD7 handset losing signal strength when gripped, Computer Weekly reports.”

HTC’s statement, in part:
Quality in industrial design is of key importance to HTC. To ensure the best possible signal strength, antennas are placed in the area least likely to be covered by a person’s face or hands while the phone is in use. However, it is inevitable that a phone’s signal strength will weaken a little when covered in its entirety by a user’s palm or fingers. We test all of our phones extensively and are confident that under normal circumstances reception strength and performance will be more than sufficient for the operation of the phone when network coverage is also adequate.

Ong reports in last July, “Apple CEO Steve Jobs called the issue ‘a challenge for the entire industry,’ saying that ‘every phone has weak spots.’ Jobs then highlighted handsets from other companies, including HTC, that also experience similar antenna issues… HTC quickly responded, objecting to being specifically called out by Jobs. ‘The reception problems are certainly not common among smartphones,’ said HTC Chief Financial Officer Hui-Meng Cheng.”

  1. Wow the media is really trouncing HTC on almost every site…..

Oh that’s right, they aren’t mentioning it at all because HTC isn’t Apple. If anyone ever needed proof the media inflates stories about Apple to get hits, this is it.

  2. Here is a funny one. Leo Laport who I always thought was fair, on one of his latest podcasts revealed the “spin” that even he gives to this problem.

He is soooo upset with his iPhone 4 that he wants to throw it across the room because of excessive dropped calls. He has converted to Android and every chance he gets he says iPhone is a good mobile device, just not a good phone because of the antenna.

His recent podcast (720 I think) he reviews Windows 7 phone (also ATT) and gives it praise except for the dropped calls, so much so that he wants to throw that phone acorss the room also. But he blames ATT for Windows 7 phone dropped calls.

You see the funny? It’s the antenna design on the iPhone and it is ATT on Windows 7 as the reason for dropped calls.

I think the jury is now in. According to Leo Laporte’s evaluation, Jobs was and is right and the iPhone is a good phone even by design.

  3. @ maclouie

    Hum, that’s Funny.
I havnt listened to any of Leo’s Podcast’s in a long time. In my opinion his production have grown so much all the shows became watered down. You don’t start a Mac-show by asking if there was any news this week? What the hell, does he even care? It’s his job to know that’s why ppl listen to the show, not just to hear they chat about which books they like. Talking about books for 10- 15 min in each damn fucking show was after a while just too much. I actualy enjoyed these book ad segments the first 20-30 times. but after that they just started to get really annoying. Do they really have to lick so much ass to get paid by the advertisers? And another thing that started to irritate me to no end was his flip flopping all the time. On the Mac show he is a mac fan, on the windows show he hates mac etc.

Gosh so I havnt listened to any of his shows in I don’t 1,5 years or something. When he started to ad allot of other shows Macbreak and TWiT became so watered down it wasn’t even fun anymore. Go back and listen to show 50-60 of TWiT or maybe show 30 of Macbreak, now there was the spirit!

Today I don’t know what he is up to. He does allot of video and runs a chat room full of 3000 nerds that screem and spam for attention during the shows. When they added shows like “This week in google” and “this week in fun” things just ran of a cliff. I mean, it’s not even worth checking out shows like that. He should have stayed with Macbreak and TWit.
