StreetInsider reports that in a note to clients today, analysts at Ticonderoga wrote, “During our meetings in Taipei, we are hearing more about adding new features to smartphones (and potentially tablets), including mobile digital TV and miniature embedded pico projectors. For example, ATSC-M/H (Advanced Television Systems Committee) Mobile Digital TV could increasingly become available in high-end smartphones in the future and we believe the next generation Apple iPhone 5 represents an attractive candidate for this feature.”
Ticonderoga continued: Watching local TV stations on a smartphone could be an attractive option for some consumers. Additionally, an embedded pico projector allows users to project a slide presentation or video on a wall or other surface area in large size, which makes sense for the iPhone 5 in our view as Apple seeks to expand the features in the next generation iPhone. Not only do we believe both features could have appeal for smartphones such as the iPhone and other leading brands but also tablet devices such as the iPad could benefit from these expanded capabilities.

This analyst is a moron and his stupid baseless speculation is not worth quoting on MDN.
I could imagine an add-on device that uses the dock, like a credit card scanner. Harder time seeing how a built in projector makes sense. I’d prefer to have an iPhone in my hand to control the presentation, possibly walking around, and have the projector stationary on a table.
Apple will never do this. The projector will drain battery life, and too many people would never use it. Free TV cannibalizes iTunes sales. What a dumba**.
The purpose of this rumor is to boost the stock of microvision- which has been absolutely pounded in the past month.
The pico projector for th iPhone 5 is for light painting. Choose a wall, extra wide person, or some available space at night and BOOM! A light paint show to impress or Ummmm, paint on jiggy surfaces!
Lawyers, start look at that new vacation you wanted but could not afford!
Unless there is some sort of brand new out-of-this-world battery technology that can improve battery life dramatically, I really don’t see AAPL add the projector feature into iPhone or iPod Touch.
My sources tell me that the iPhone 10 will include a cloaking device, a personal transport beaming app, and pepper spray dispenser.
Pico projector on a smartphone doesnt sound as a reasonable thing. But what could be potential applications of pico projectors?
Biometric sensors make more sense. Everyone would use that.
TV tuner in an iPhone?? Come on… dont be stupid.
A pico projector, no way in hell.
If this rumour is to be believed, we would be able to project large images onto screens from our iPhones. What they don’t explain is how the sound will be made audible so that it can be heard by a large number of people. The small speaker in an iPhone simply isn’t going to be able to do that.
I don’t see Apple offering a partial solution, so I reckon that Apple will not be one of the smartphone manufacturers adding pico projectors at this stage.
This would be good for hotel rooms, but I think it is not in Apple’s DNA to add something like this.
I usually take an Apple iPod/iPhone charger/connector to composite/SCART converter cable on family holidays so the kids can watch movies at night.
I’d rather have a better battery.
Analysts vs Bloggers: What’s the difference?
Bloggers have intelligent thoughts sometimes.
Makes more sense to have projectors compatible with airplay than built into the phone. This way the presentation could be controlled from the device.
No and no. Extremely dumb speculation.
Is pico-projection quality as good as displaying an image wirelessly on a real HDTV? Apple probably will use the tech solution with best image quality (and the one that allows the company to sell AppleTV boxes).
If anything, this might be an opportunity for 3rd party devices. (Either an attachment to the iOS device OR a projector with an iOS input.)
Too little interest I believe to make this standard on a phone.
People the reason for this is not for projecting video – think about in terms of doing a business presentation such as slides … that would be the use. But I agree not going to happen.
Say what you will… An ATSC would be AWESOME. I just hope an Android phone gets one and that THAT phone becomes the next big thing… because that’s the only way iPhone would EVER get an ATSC tuner.
An ATSC Tuner combined with Airplay would be uber cool.

+1 on the stupid speculation scale. iPhone 5 will probably have improved speed, be a little lighter, more memory, and so forth. Incremental improvements like 3GS.
Pico projectors are an obvious feature that will very likely make it to future phones including the iPhone and devices like iPad. Maybe not iPhone 5 but I can’t believe all you people don’t see the potential once battery life and the technology itself become a non-issue.
Apple has even filed patents for pico projection technologies and I believe it will only be a matter of time before they implement it somewhere.
A TV tuner would be most welcome ! Proably won’t make it since it competes with iTunes etc.. but then again so does the CineXplayer app.
