Apple has debuted a new iPad commercial, “iPad is Amazing,” on U.S. broadcast and cable television networks. Besides clearly targeting geeks in one spot (mom has no idea what “TED” is) is one segment, the TV spot also shows off some iOS 4.2.1 features:
MacDailyNews Take: The general gist of all of these spots is that iPad does so many things, you have to have one. And, that’s a very good impression to leave with consumers. The details of what’s featured don’t really matter much as long as cool and varied uses are shown.
We’ve had iPads since Day One and we don’t want to think about what we did before we had them (forever pinching and scrolling on tiny-screened iPhones). Where iPhone was once our favorite device, now it’s become just our favorite pocketable device. We’d never choose to use it over iPad except for phone calls or as an iPod on-the-go.
Of note, over the Thanksgiving weekend, we encountered more than one relative over the age of 55 who’d never shown much interest in computers, but who had their own (or taken over their spouses’) iPad and was using it for hours each day. This only reinforces our long-held contention that Apple’s has made a real breakthrough here; they’ve shifted the paradigm with iPad. People who’ve never wanted to touch a mouse want to touch the screen. That alone makes iPad truly revolutionary.
Ok I’ll ask….
Who is Ted?

My father is still carrying around an old iBook G4. The 6 lbs doesn’t seem like much, but it is still heavy to lug around on vacation. An iPad at a quarter of that weight is just right.
When people see the iPad in use, they just have to get it.
Have you seen the remote control the TiVo made the iPad into. When they release it, everyone will believe that every HDTV needs to come with an iPad.

Here’s a good one: http://www.ted.com/talks/steve_jobs_how_to_live_before_you_die.html
That HP envy printer is pretty kick-ass!
I’ll be glad when this ad campaign is over. The music seems best for ADD people.
I think it’s a bit disingenuous for Apple to push Airprint in the ads. We use iPads in our enterprise setting. No one – NO ONE – has been able to use Airprint with its list of five or so HP printers. We don’t use it because we don’t have those printers. Utterly ridiculous!
However… on another note, after showing a 65-year old woman at Thanksgiving dinner what could be done with an iPad, she decided on the spot she wanted one. She’s going to get it this week.
David F:
You really need to be patient wih AirPrint. This is the same scenario as was years ago, when Bonjour (originally named Rendezvous) was introduced. One of the main advantages of the technology was driverless configuration of peripherals. You hook up your USB printer and it shows up and prints automatically. It took some time for manufacturers to include Bonjour. Same thing here, although I’m sure six months from now, literally ALL printer makers will have their ENTIRE product line support AirPrint. Inclusion of the feature is likely a trivial task, and benefit will clearly be significant, considering over 100 million iOS devices out there that can print to such a printer.

Printopia => 9.95
At first it did not work, I deleted and reinstalled the printer and it works fine with my HP 1200
FLASH video on MDN for an iPad ad? When will you guys get it and stop using FLASH video?
I was just in line at Jersey Mikes getting a Philly cheese steak and was using my iPad and the elderly lady behind me started asking a bunch of questions about it. I happily responded to all of them and she said she is definitely going to get one for Christmas. This reminds me of when got the original iPhone. People had the same curiosity and reaction to it.

“FLASH video on MDN for an iPad ad? When will you guys get it and stop using FLASH video?”
Would someone explain to me how, if it is Flash, I see the web site and the video on my iPad?
I bought one for my wife for Christmas. About 2 months ago she was looking at eReaders. She loves to read and she saw other people on her commuter bus to N.Y. with eReaders. Not only the bus has free WiFi. I was telling to buy a iPad and she told me she did not want to spend that much on a eReader. I told her that it does a lot more things than read books. Then she told me we will see. She felt the same way 3 years ago with the iPod. Now she loves it! She will not go anywhere without her iPod. When she gets it and begin using it she will begin to love it like her iPod. Not only she can listen to music but she can read and do other things too.
@ lochias
Because the web server senses your platform and doesn’t send Flash to you. If you look at MDN with a desktop, Mac or PC, Flash is what you get…
Anyone feel up to playin some PONG?
Really? A flash embedded video, here?
