UK reseller: Windows Phone ‘07 handsets are not selling

Cyber Monday “Windows Phone 7 has got off to a sluggish start as far as our customers are concerned, accounting for just 3% of smartphone sales and a little under 2% of overall sales through MobilesPlease.co.uk and our network of partner sites that share our data feed,” Ben Pusey reports via the Mobilesplease blog. “Symbian 3 handsets outsold Windows 7 Phones by 3 to 1.”

“I wanted to make sure that our figures weren’t anomalous, so I went to a few local high street mobile phone retailers, both network owned and independent and although they couldn’t give me numbers the story was the same, Windows Phone 7 Handsets are not selling,” Pusey reports. “The retailers I spoke to said that demand for iPhone, Blackberry and HTC handsets was strong in the smartphone sector. Perhaps surprisingly, our local Carphone Warehouse did not have any Windows Phone 7 handsets on display, and when I asked they said that they ‘might have one in the back.’ I’m sure this isn’t indicative of all retailers’ position on Windows Phone 7 but it’s still interesting.”

MacDailyNews Take: As we wrote on October 30, 2010: Sadly, over what will certainly be a major hit to the humor quotient, we don’t believe that even Microsoft’s investors are in deep enough comas to allow this buffoon to survive as CEO after Windows Phone ’07 fails to set the world on fire in 2011. To have a realistic shot at catching a whiff of Apple’s fumes, Microsoft needed Windows Phone ’15 in 2011, not Windows Phone ’07. They’re already eight years behind. Ballmer chances of remaining CEO after this plays out are not good.

  1. Remember MS’s iPhone Funeral?

I think a campaign should be started where Redmond is bombarded by “Get Well” greeting cards saying:

“We hope Windows Phone 7 recovers from being on life support. We would hate for you to have to have another funeral!” ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue wink” style=”border:0;” />

  2. “might have one in the back.”

Yeah…right beside the one Zune that is in the back.”

Anyway, it is a sad day as I am concerned about Ballmer’s longevity.

Long live Ballmer… MS-CEO forever. Life would be Dell…errr…Dull without him.

  3. @NHL
The UK also has a thriving Linux community, they seam to have no problem dumping Windows for Linux (or at least are more open to trying it)

    Ballmer…. just go away, asshole.

  4. Interesting that Ballmer used “delightful,” as Jobs uttered the phrase “surprise and delight” about his products just months ago. MS even copies Jobs’s words, for God’s sake.

  5. Poor old microsh*t…another epic fail so it seems. You wonder why the shareholders continue to tolerate this. Clearly the company is dysfunctional and incapable of maintaining any semblance of relevance. While it does have its cash cows and a patent portfolio to go trolling on for a few more decades, surely the alarm bells must be starting to ring, particularly on Monkey Boy’s reverse Midas touch- it all turns to shit. There has been no killed ‘app’ from microsh*t in years. They seriously need to clear house, get leaner and meaner and set a focus instead of trying to be all things to all people and end up being nothing to no one. I guess they play maintain a presence in all segments of IT so that if one become a major revenue stream in the future, they are in a position to ramp up their presence and take over. Unfortunately, sometimes starting too far behind means the race is lost before it even begins. They really should stop trying to copy Apple and Google and forge new directions where they set the agenda, not play catch up and duplicate. The something that is rotten in the state of Redmond must surely clearly evident to all and sundry: microsh*t doesn’t innovate; it duplicates- poorly,
