“Daring Fireball’s John Gruber reports that Apple’s Steve Jobs will join News Corp.’s Rupert Murdoch onstage at a December 9 event to announce Murdoch’s new forthcoming tablet newspaper, The Daily,” Carmody reports. “According to Gruber’s sources, The Daily will be an app in the App Store, but make use of new recurring subscription billing on users’ iTunes accounts, and ‘developers at News Corp. building the app already have preliminary documentation on the new subscription billing APIs from Apple.'”
Carmody reports, “Macstories’ Federico Viticci reports further that recurring subscriptions are part of a new version of iOS — iOS 4.3 — with a scheduled release date of December 13.”

I’m looking forward to this. That earlier story about Esquire (or GQ or whatever) magazine being delayed because of the content has me a little bit worried (though the story wasn’t exactly clear). If I’m going to completely replace magazines with their digital equivalent it’s the one area that I wouldn’t want Apple to censor. Call me a hypocrite, but I don’t mind the app control but censoring a magazines content seems different ro me.
Murdoch can stick his ‘Daily’ where the sun don’t shine. This guy and his disgusting offspring are trying to take over the world’s media and drag it all down to the levels of Fox News and The Sun. Once he gets his hands on significant slices of the satellite and cable TV business you’ll see cross-subsidisation and loss-led marketing designed only to put the competition out of business and force his gutter press quality-free shit onto all of us.

I don’t think I’ll be in a hurry to update to 4.3 just so I can have “subscriptions.”
I will be happy. Currently read 12 magazines and five newspapers on the iPad and certainly will be happy not to have to pay the outrageous rates if the others follow. The onle bargain right now is People, but I don’t have a sub to it. The Times if London is the best paper for the money, in my opinion. Hearst is slated to bring the Houston Chronicle to the iPad soon, either it’s top or second largest newspaper.
