NPD: 11% of consumers likely to purchase Apple iPad by February 2011

Apple Online Store“In a survey of consumers conducted by the NPD Group, 11 percent said they are likely to purchase an iPad from Apple by February of 2011,” AppleInsider reports.

“The data from a NPD ‘fact sheet’ issued for the holiday consumer electronics buying season suggests the sales momentum for Apple’s iPad has shown no signs of slowing down,” AppleInsider reports. “NPD also reiterated its findings that iPad usage increases with length of ownership.”

AppleInsider reports, “Consumers who owned an iPad for two months or less use it a fair amount: about 15 hours per week… For those who have had Apple’s touchscreen tablet for three months or more, the average length of use is about 18 hours per week.”

  1. Only 15 to 18 hours per week?

Jesus, I use my MacBook Pro (or my Linux netbook) at least 15 to 18 hours a day.

Either/or or both are always on and if you want to know why, read this article.

Apparently 15-18 hours a week is considered “minimal usage” by the Internet mentally handicapped. Explains the simple finger based interface. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  2. I believe the only reason there ARE the other 89% is the economy. The ones that are likely to buy (the 11%) are currently able to afford it. The rest fall into the category of “would LOVE to buy” (which includes myself). As a sole breadwinner for a family of four, spending more than half of my income on housing (almost $4k), iPad simply isn’t anywhere on the list today. It would be just amazing if I had friends who were of means, and were to give it to myself (or anyone else in my family) as a holiday gift, but it ain’t happening. So, for now, we’ll have to wait until the significant other is able to generate some income, before the iPad crawls its way onto that list…

  3. Are you using Kinect to surf the web?

That’s a pretty lame comeback there Chrissy, I know your more capable than that.

Hey, Apple is about making profits. If that means selling some overpriced stripped netbook for twice the price of a laptop to people who only have the brains to use the Internet a mere 15 to 18 hours a week, so be it.

Dummies with 90% are the majority!

  4. 11% of what?

Previous owners? Mac owners? Teens? PC owners?

This is a stupid statistic that mean nothing. Better yet…I say 99% of the people who don’t currently own an iPad, have a serious case of “iPad envy”.

And just in case you’re wondering “Bunches”, there’s a cream for that.

  5. My best friends, not even Apple fanboys, FINALLY agreed to to purchase an iPad. They were reluctant to say the least. They both love Baldy Balmer, anything MS including ZUNES, and worst of all, thinks that Dell make the best computers in the world.

We went to one of the local Apple Stores and here’s their purchase. Also, they have three young boys, 8, 10 and 11:

    5 iPads of various sizes,
5 iPhone 4s in both sizes,
1 Mac Pro for his office (about $17,000),
5 iPod shuffles just for kicks,
    2 iMacs, 27 inches,
2 13″ MacBook Airs (custom ordered by phone for configuration)
    3 11″ MacBook Airs
    Apple Care for each product
    5 iWork suites
9 iPad Touches for Holiday gifts to other family members

and, then, the next day bought 10,000 shares of Apple and 20,000 shares of Netflix.

He finally admitted you do get what you pay for and thought he made a good investment. His only headache is knowing he will have to do it all over again in three years.

Regardless, it took 3 Apple stores including the online store to get the job done.

Too bad we are all living in a Deep Recession!!!!

  6. iGads
In all fairness, it does say 11% of “consumers”, which is virtually everyone. The universe of consumers is then narrowed down by “those buying something between now and February. It all begs the question, of course, of just how many consumer fit into this category. 100? 100,000,000? Like you said, pretty worthless without more data.

  7. They imply that using an iPad for over two months increases how much you use it. That may be true or it may not, but the fact is that that observation may just as well be caused this way:

The first people who bought iPads were early adopters, techies who use computers and devices more than the rest of us. Those who bought the iPad a couple of months later are likely to use their iPads a little bit less.

Liberal arts majors should not be allowed to use statistics without consulting a mathematician. It should be a law. Yet many universities teach stats in the sociology department instead of the math department.

  8. Well I’m not getting one, and there are legions of us out there who love our Zunes and Windows 7—both of which don’t work on a dumpy I-Pad. How do you run Microsoft Office on a button-challenged I-Pad? You can’t! It must suck for you MAC lemmings when you realize there isn’t a Zune Marketplace app on your overpriced netbook wannabe. Just like everything else with MAC you have to use I-Tunes and do everything their way.

Aunt Millie is bringing her new Windows 7 laptop to Thanksgiving dinner today. She says she has some pictures from her trip to Branson, MO she wants to show everyone. Try doing that on your little I-Pads. Losers.

And hey, MAC sheep, don’t be surprised when you see Zunes and Windows 7 tablets at the top of Amazon’s bestsellers lists this holiday season.

    Your potential. Our passion.™
