Regarding the performance (or lack thereof) of MacDailyNews.com and the MacDailyNews app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch:
Our traffic is growing rapidly and demand from a growing list of devices continues to increase. We are acutely aware of the issues and we have been working on and investing in solutions for some time now.
All will be revealed soon.
Thank you for your patience and for patronizing our advertisers without whom MacDailyNews could not exist,
MacDailyNews Webmaster
Ah, now we understand: MDN is the new occupant of the North Carolina facility.
…demand from a growing list of devices continues to increase…
Yep, the good old days when you could design a web page only for a 15″ Windows XP IE PC Tower and everyone else had to suck wind are over.
The fracturing is only going to continue.
Well, there ARE a lot of Flash ads, at least on the MacDailyNews.com side of things.
Ok ok, but when will the Android version of the MDN app be available?
I only know most of the time I find myself waiting for the regular website to load – it’s usually the ads I’m waiting for. Yippee.
And could you make it respect the initial orientation of the device. It’s really annoying to have to tilt the device every time mdn starts to get it to flip into horizontal.
Ironically, the app wouldn’t load this article. Took numerous tries.
_Bill_,
On the first Tuesday after never.
Glad to see you acknowlage the problem and are working on it. More companies and people should do that.
How about not pretending that we don’t know what the REAL slowdown is caused by…
the wall-to-wall Flash-based advertising on macdailynews.com
Hey, MDN, maybe it’s time to start offering the advertisers a little discount if they submit their ads in HTML5?
I too am glad to hear you are aware of the problem. I am so tempted to delete the MDN App from my iOS devices, it’s so unreliable it’s more of a digital paperweight than a useful App.
MDN, can you at least give us a hint as to what you are planning? You’re not Apple Inc., why the secrecy?
I realy like the web site:
there’s no dynamic html/flash like on other news sites (exept in the adds) I hate flash/dynamic html
Thank you for the acknowledgement. I really want to love the app, but I am forced to delete and reload it 2-3 times per week, due to the log-in bug.
This makes it impossible to save stories as favorites.
Also, it is very irritating when the app loads blank pages.
I can live with it. The reporting is amazing. The “MacDailyNews take” is often witty an frequently entertaining. Fast or slow, it beats all other tech news on the planet.
Seems like an over-burdened server scenario.. Slow during the day, fast at night (in US).
Which way to North Carolina?
_Bill_ – Ok ok, but when will the Android version of the MDN app be available?
Too soon for Windows Mobile 7, too?
Good problem to have.
It’s all those new Winblows ’07 devices coming on line.
Well, this obviously doesn’t apply to the apps, but since MDN mentioned the website as well… it definitely gets bogged down by the ads.
ClickToFlash shows me there’s still a lot of flash stuff on the site.
Now if only they could get MDN to stop randomly crashing Safari when you leave the home page.
Start by reducing the Flash Ads on each page. It’s killing the site.
MDN can you just replace the flash Ads? I am blocking flash on my Mac and I think most MDN users do it as well. So why bother?
Whatever happened to good old Static ads!! Remember that html stuff?
So it’s a good problem to have. I prefer the web site over the app on my iPad. And as for the ads, you gotta pay the bills.
It does appear that the over animated ads drag down the response of the sight. Maybe approval of the ads response and digital size would help you out. The Apple viewer consumption of information will only grow.
Good luck on what ever you are trying. I know of a BILLION DOLLAR SERVER FARM that is lightly used at this time that could help you out. When you call the farm, just ask for the guy in charge. His name is Steve.
