Apple’s iPad 2 expected to seriously hurt iPad wannabe sales in 2011

“As rumors that Apple’s iPad 2 will launch in the first quarter of 2011 circulate the IT market, sources from notebook players pointed out that if the rumors are true, the launch is expected to seriously weaken other PC vendors’ tablet PCs,” Monica Chen and Joseph Tsai report for DigiTimes.

“Since consumer demand for tablet PCs is still limited, while most upstream and downstream players are over-optimistic about the market, tablet PCs may see a sharp drop in demand as soon as the third quarter of 2011, after a big battle in the second,” Chen and Tsai report.

  1. There’s no competition. Samsung Galaxy is complete junk, and the wireless contract is plagued with hidden fees. Also, you only get 1GB of data download, before you go over your limit. That is about the only vendor who can even come close to being considered a “competitor” and I’m being generous.

  2. I don’t bother reading rumors. I Just keep using
my iPad and finding new surprising ways to
enjoy it. Happier than a pig in slop!

  3. The great thing about this is that now that Apple is firmly in everybodies worldview, everyone is going to see first hand the blatant design xeroxing action that follows almost every product they release or update.

  4. My wife and I took a trip down to Baltimore on Saturday and what did we see…a week old new Mac retailer (Capitolmac) at Fells Point still offering their 10% grand opening special. So now my wife has her own iPad and can stop bugging me for mine. Limited demand my ass.

  5. The competition is non-existent right now. Without an actual tablet ready OS from Android or HP, Apple already has the tablet monopoly pat during this holiday season (plus inventory, channels, mindshare, first mover’s advantage, screen size, flash etc.) and until the next iteration of iPad 2 (April or summer). Besides which, most other tablet vendors would see a surge in returned items as none of them can match anywhere near the value and quality of iPad as it stands right now.

So, the probable victim of this silly “rumour” appears more likely to be the Apple’s holiday sale of iPad original.

Sometimes this forum can be full of so many clueless.

  6. unless you are getting holiday gifts – and there will be huge iPad 1 sales for that – all smart tablet buyers are now waiting until next year. this is for both iPad 2 with its FaceTime camera and other improvements, or the upcoming slew of decent Android tablets.

big question is how different iPad 2 will be from iPad 1. will it just be some tweaks and a lower price, or major changes like much lighter weight and retina display at the same price?

yes, the estimates of 45 million+ tablet sales next year strike me as wildly optimistic. but whatever it is, the iPad will probably get about 1/2, with Fragdroid tablets splitting most of the rest in a price race to the bottom.

  7. Apple and others need to press their patent infringement suits against Android and its proxies. Android users are going to gravitate to Android tablets, whether they are as good as the iPad or not. Just heard Leo Laporte over the weekend talking up the Galaxy. He’s an Android convert and thinks the Galaxy is great. It’s amazing what people will settle for, but unless Apple can take some functionality away from Android from patent issues, it will find people that see it as an iPad duplicate that is more “open” than Apple’s iPad. Unfortunately, a computer user universe that comes from a 90% Wintel background still sees Apple as an expensive, form over function, extravagance. Old myths die hard.

In other words, there are a number of idiots out there. I think the world would be OK still without everyone on board.

Let the legal eagles do their thing in due course (meaning Apple can win without winning the courtrooms), meanwhile let the Android pipe dream count down the electric sheep.

It doesn’t matter how many folks go with Android or Win or RIM or Palm tablets. Doesn’t matter how people “see them.” Who cares, we can just buy iPads. I have been an Apple owner since 1984 and never worried that they were not the only ones selling computers. Hell, I enjoyed, and still enjoy the advantages I have had over those 90% you are so concerned about. Sort of like having the best golf clubs and not the biggest selling ones. I have made a lot of money both from using Apples superior products and investing in their stock. Relax, it is not a religion.

  10. I have a confession to make…

While waiting for the iPad 2 to hit next spring, I became bored.

I found out I can get an android 2.2 tablet for about $100 after rebate and a 20% off code.

Let me tell you this. Apple has nothing to worry about ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

It’s so-so. Plays angry birds pretty slow… Surfs the web slower than my iPhone on 3G. (while the tablet is on wifi..)
The marketplace is ok, browser is ok, android ui itself… Needs help.

Makes me want to buy one of the steve jobs action figures, and beg it to forgive me for buying a droid to mess with.

All in all, worth the $100? Not really… I love how the appkiller app is the top downloaded app on the marketplace lol.

And yes… It needs the app. Badly.

Will android hurt ipad sales? Doubt it. Will iPad 2 hurt ALL other tablet sales? After the iPad 2 launches… There will be iPad/iPad 2 and the junk heap that is the rest of them.

(oh… And don’t ask about the f-ing nightmare the android tablet was to get my PC to even recognize it, yes my PC not going to mar my Mac with it’s vile USB cable.)
