Analyst: Don’t expect iPad 2 until next April; CDMA iPhone coming in March

Apple Online Store“Apple will roll out a second-generation iPad next April, a year after the original’s launch, according to a Wall Street analyst,” Gregg Keizer reports for Computerworld.

“Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co., said Apple will take an annual refresh path for its tablet, just as it has for the iPhone, which has seen new models introduced in June or July the last three years,” Keizer reports. “‘I think April is the proper time-frame for an iPad 2,’ said Marshall, using a label that’s been bandied about for the next iteration of Apple’s tablet. ‘Since I’m projecting that Apple will release a CDMA iPhone in March, both will help to equalize Apple’s seasonality.'”

Keizer reports, “‘[iPad 2] will be the same form factor, but with dual-camera functionality,’ said Marshall, echoing others who have bet on two cameras in the next iPad. That would let iPad users run FaceTime, the video calling software Apple rolled out with the iPhone 4 last summer… But don’t expect more storage in the iPad 2, warned Marshall. “I don’t think we’ll see higher-capacity iPads,” he said, placing his bet on the same 16GB, 32GB and 64GB configurations Apple now sells.”

  1. Analyst: Don’t expect iPad 2 until next April

Don’t believe the anal-ists, they just want you to rush out and buy the old iPad v1 for the holidays.

The iPad v2 is going to be announced in January, to start shipping a month or so later and increasing in volume as the bugs get worked out.

It will have a dual core A4 processor and be able to run Flash and do a HELL of a lot more than iPad v1. Less battery life though, so you have been warned.

  2. I could see them dropping the 16GB model and only offering 32GB and 64GB versions but at the 499/599, 629/729 price points of the first versions 16GB and 32GB.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the mute switch was remove completely. With the software orientation lock and the ability to mute fairly quickly by holding volume down, a mute switch is a bit redundant.
At least one camera is as close to a guarantee as we’ll get, I’m not so sure a second is needed but just for the sake of having it, they might add it (plus, having iMovie on the ipad would be great).
RAM bump seems necessary and then perhaps a thinner case.

  3. iPad 2 priority list (in order of importance):

    1. weight
    2. weight
    3. weight
    4. weight
    5. weight

If Apple can find some way to get it under a pound, I’ll have no complaints. I truly don’t give a shit about cameras. I just want it to be light as possible without feeling cheap.

Do you live in a cave & wander round the campfire within 20′ of the power outlet? I sure like the idea of portability which implies that I take the iPad out of mom’s basement where you live to the real world where I get work done. If I get a full 10 hours of use out of a single charge then yes, sacrificing flash isn’t a big deal.

Cave dwellers like you on the other hand want everything flash based because you can’t get your hand away from your wang long enough to get a job.

  5. You’ve REALLY got to get to a gym as soon as possible! I just finished reading Ron Chernow’s “Washington: A Life,” a massive book that weighs almost three pounds . . . and not ONCE in two weeks did I have to go to a doctor for reading-related injuries!

This weight-thing you people are obsessed with is puerile and pathetic. Bulk up, sir or madam: get in shape and join the rest of the world that finds the iPod’s mass inconsequential!

Weaklings. Who needs ’em? (Oh, and a quick piece of advice: Don’t break anything lifting an Oktoberfest mug of pumpkin ale later this week. I know for a fact that particular adult beverage package weighs MUCH more than a pound!)

  6. NOTE: The user “Bunches of Munches” is clearly a twist on Zune Tang. This user says random nutty things just to see what he/she can stir up. Just go read through his/her posts.

  7. No Flash or pr0n on the iPad makes for a lot of sexually frustrated users like ‘Ballmer’s left nut’ obviously.

Tell me ‘Ballmer’s left nut’ how “blue” are you?

    Bright purple perhaps?

    Thanks guys…I needed a laugh… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  8. We all knew the iPad was a half baked product from the start…I mean if the hole in the frame for the camera that was supposed to be there wasn’t a big enough hint…

I will wait for the iPad that has all the orifices filled.

    just my $0.02

  9. @iSteve, I agree. A rear-facing camera on an iPad makes no sense at all. Walking around with an iPad shooting video or pictures would make a person look almost as stupid as somebody walking around talking on the phone on a Dell Streak.

  10. I think Apple will release the new iPads and iPhones earlier next year.  They will need to get a jump on some real iPad competition.  If the AT&T contract does run out this year than they will get on Verizon ASAP, they know how much money they are loosing.  Next spring will be more about Lion and getting the developers on board.  Mac will be back.

Apple tends to dump it’s low memory modals and add a higher one with the same, or lower price points.  It is about Moor’s Law.  They will keep one without a camera, maybe the same one we have now at a lower price.  They would loose a lot of business customers who use them in places where cameras are not aloud.  There will be one with a camera and gyroscope for FaceTime no doubt.

  11. Apple never releases new products before the holidays. iPad 2 will come March/April, on Apple’s typical yearly refresh cycle, but Apple may try to push it a little earlier to separate it timewise from the iPhone release date.

Two cameras actually adds quite a bit of functionality both for FaceTimt and for business uses like realtors, etc. It won’t add much to the cost and it will be another feature that competitors (not that there are any right now) won’t be able to crow about.

Holding an iPad up for a photo/video my look silly, but you probably get a more stable shot than holding an iPhone.

  12. Still betting the iPad 1 16GB will be retained at the low end for somewhere between $299 and $399. The next step up will be the 32GB iPad 2. The pricing could be $499 unless they decide not to have WiFi only versions. Competitors will go crazy, and fear of this is slowing their entry as much as are the technology hurdles.

  13. You folks that think a rear facing camera is stoopid are not thinking this though…..The rear camera is used as a feature on face time to show the person on the other end what you are looking at without having to flip the unit clumsily around.

The facetime “flip” works very very well. Like you folks, I don’t think the rear camera for picture/video is essential, but I sure wouldn’t complain if the iPad 2 includes this functionality. But I think the rear camera really complements facetime, so we may very well see it.
