Nilay Patel reports for Engadget, “Some comments attributed to Steve Wozniak caused quite a kerfuffle this morning — according to Dutch paper De Telegraaf, Woz said that “Android phones have more features,” which would help Google’s OS become the dominant smartphone platform.”
“There’s just one problem, though: Woz never said anything like that,” Patel reports. “He says he’d ‘never’ say that Android was better than iOS, and that ‘Almost every app I have is better on the iPhone.'”

I’m sick of the Android marketshare hype. So what? Anybody can give away their phones for market share. Nokia controls the global handset market, but you never hear about that? Why? Because it’s Apple with all the profits. Android will not be the same for Google as Windows was for Microsoft. Google does not make any money from licensing Android. Google claims Android increases its mobile ad revenue but people using iPhones use Google anyway so not sure about that argument. The various Android manufacturers are merely shifting profits from eachother not from Apple. HTC’s profits come at the expense of LG. It’s all smoke and mirrors.d

Maybe they didn’t get wind of the story until Woz’s retraction came. Maybe they were *just* about to hit the publish button when they saw it. Maybe they consciously suppressed the news for fear that MDNers everywhere would kill themselves.

I have a feeling Woz did say something to the effect as he hasn’t really retracted every word of it. He merely added that apps on the iPhone are better to soften the blow.
To me, at least, Woz often comes across a petulant jealous vying for attention when one time talent does not suffice.
I have a feeling that the Dutch paper De Telegraaf may contradict Woz’s latest claim if he tries to discredit them too much to save face and his big mouth.
Well, good old Woz is not entirely wrong tho, like it or not…Android has done a good job the last year or so grabbing a healthy smartphone market share.

What do you mean Android did a good job – Android did not do shit – It was the cell phone manufacturers who had no smart phone OS that they could use so they picked the “Free” one – They want to sell handsets so Android is what they got – Sort of like Bubba Gump Shrimp – they got the market share by default.
I don’t know of any business that would issue Android phones to their workforce as they would be idiots to do it.
Sour grapes talking? Seems to me you are actually viewing Android as a real threat to iOS when you get that upset about garbage.

Maybe Android will take bigger marketshare, maybe not (like iPod defeated the hordes of Samsung, Msft, Creative, Sandisk, Sony etc).
But even if Android grows I suspect it’ll just take over more and more of the ‘cheapo phone’ market: the OS is ‘free’ so OEMs can load them on whatever they want. Already we see android on cheap lock down, limited app store, crapware full phones (these are one helping them gain market share as EVERY droid phone even BOGO free ones are counted) and things like digital picture frames.
Won’t effect apple much: already with just 2-4% marketshare iPhone already takes 39-50% of world smartphone profits (Cannacord and Asymco numbers) and has by far the largest app store (over 100k bigger than android and android app stats isn’t growing super fast due to android fragmentation).

google actually gets a royalty for every phone with Android on it they could still have cheapo phones but they will make tons of money; only a pitence of apple even then

I tried an Android tablet the other day – a 10 inch one, meaning, something like the iPad.
The experience was horrible. Android is not half as intuitive as iOS, the interface doesn’t “flow”. The iPad feels natural, there’s no effort into using it. It reacts the way you expect to.
Android -at least in this tablet- was very unresponsive, slow, it did not flow.
I don’t think they are doing a great job there. Sure, it might be better than Windows Mobile, but they are very very very far away from Apple.

Nobody really heard about it zinze it vas in De Dutch.
The Android apps scene will fail for the same reason that Linux isn’t making it to the desktop: Open source developers have no clue as to what a decent user interface/look/feel is, even though all the functionality may be there. Just look at GIMP: it outclasses Photoshop in many areas, certainly feature wise, but its user interface remains clunky, after years of exposure to he user community.

Basically he’s saying Android will beat iOS <u>in market share</u>(because it’s on more devices) comparing it to Windows (being separate from hardware) on a PC’s.
He also says the quality of Androids app’s is lower than on iOS, more app’s than iOS as well because of that. Android is “for the masses” while iOS is for those who want better looks, security and less crap.
The same thing occurs with Safari and Firefox add-ons, Safari has a pitiful small amount of very good add-on’s, while Firefox has over 10,000 add-ons of all types of various types struggling to rise to the top. So Apple basically picks the best of what’s most used on Firefox that doesn’t offend Apple’s user interface, thus gives users little choice.
For the technological ignorant Apple’s approach is best, but once one gets over their ignorance and ventures out, Firefox quickly becomes the power web surfer tool of choice.

There is nothing “natural” or “no effort” using iOS, nearly everything is hidden by some double tab or swipe or hidden touch area. It’s frustrating as all hell to new persons who expect to see a icon or a window or a button to click on, the accidental touches and the “why did it do that?” are very annoying to new users.
It’s just that your used to only using iOS, and benefiting from a consistent interface, so something different doesn’t feel natural to you.
Try using different devices and operating systems regularly, then you can make a more accurate assessment.
