RUMOR: iOS 4.2 delayed due to iPad WiFi issue; new GM build imminent

“Two days ago we reported Mac OS X 10.6.5 and iTunes 10.1 were set to come out on Wednesday, with iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch to follow on Friday Nov. 12th — tomorrow,” Federico Viticci reports for MacStories. “Mac OS X 10.6.5 indeed came out, without AirPrint functionality for shared printers as previously reported as well. iTunes 10.1 didn’t come out.”

“Basing on the information we got from a reliable source, it appears that iOS 4.2 has been delayed due to last-minute WiFi connection issues experienced by many users running the GM build on the iPad,” Viticci reports. “The bug has been reported to Apple, and they apparently decided to delay the release of iOS 4.2 to fix the bug.”

Viticci reports, “Apple may release a second GM build as early as tomorrow to deal with WiFi issues. This will delay the release for at least a week while it is tested, but may not get public release until the following week as it appears Apple will be testing it vigorously. iOS 4.2 should, however, come out before Thanksgiving.”

  1. NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

actually, they’d better fix the wi-fi, I’m getting drop outs like crazy on my current one whilst sitting to my macbook, ibook …etc… ever since the last update.

Applecare is useless now. I’ve done their troubleshooting for them, I just need them to tell me whether wiping the device will resolve my problem… ie, is this a bug or not.

Instead their position is “It may or may not fix the issue” … well … TEST it!!!

Took me 45 minutes and 1hr 15mins on previous occasions for issues that I’ve already completed toubleshooting.

The person I spoke with didn’t even have an iPad in front of him. I could tell it’s all screenshots from his end, he sounded like he was squinting from the high resolution picture just to read out what the screenshot has.

  2. Thank god they’re testing iOS4.2 and not releasing it with that bug! The wi-fi bug with the original iPad 3.2 release was bad enough until they finally released the fix 3 months later with 3.2.1. I certainly don’t want to have to go through having to deal with that again.

  3. I think that the Mac side of the AirPrint is there already. If you go into Settings/Sharing and choose Printer Sharing. All what Apple had to do was to add the ability to sniff that shared printer or networked printer to the iOS devices. Remember Apple is trying to do this without drivers installed on the iOS device. Maybe this is where the problem is.

  4. Although I’d prefer the new iOS like yesterday, I’m happy they’re taking the extra steps to ensure as much a bug free experience as possible. I’ve waited this long, a few more days of waiting are fine with me.

  5. Pawpower1995, When iOS 4 came out it wasn’t for the iPad, 4.2 brings all the features of 4, plus the ones specific to this update to all iOS devices including the iPad. As such, whilst the updates will be the same for all devices, the iPad will get more features, solely because it was behind to start with.

  6. You know what’s happening to me? I’m running iOS 4.2GM on my iPhone 4 and iPad. The airplay symbol has been on both since I downloaded the GM. Usually, it just gave the options to my use my AE and computer when I tapped on it. Once, just once, it even gave the option to use my ATV (it didn’t work, obviously). But, for the last several days, the airplay symbol has disappreared. Completely. Maybe this is part of the problem. This happens on both my iPhone 4 and iPad. just my $.02. Btw, I don’t have the wifi problem.

We all are so glad that you are clearly superior to the second largest US company and their team of hardware and software engineers. They are so lucky to have you available with your vast knowledge and ability to troubleshoot for them. How on earth do they make all those billions of dollars without you in their employ?

  8. So the unconfirmed, just pulled it out of my nether region rumor of the release on the 12th is possibly wrong, but according to my sources(whose existence is unconfirmed ), it will come out sometime in November?

Wake me when it is actually released-not just rumored, speculated, hoped for.

  9. Children, don’t get your panties in a knot. You’re getting this for free, yet you act like crybabies. A little patience would be nice.

Perhaps you would prefer to have a buggy 4.2 now rather than wait a few more days? I am happy to be patient and avoid s lot of aggravation.

Instead of jumping to conclusions based on inaccurate rumors, why not wait for the facts?

You guys make my head hurt.

“…You can install far more apps than what are
    visible on the 11 pages… I have 753 Apps
    on my iPad…”

Prove it rbutler222. Show us how while we
    wait for IOS 4.2
