Some clarification on AirPrint Support in iOS 4.2

“Conflicting reports about AirPrint support in iOS 4.2 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 are coming from all over the place, and the whole iOS community is more or less in the dark as to the current state and future of AirPrint,” PadGadget reports.

“Here is what we know: our iPads running iOS 4.2 GM (8C134) do not see printers shared by our Macs running the official 10.6.5 version of OS X (10H574) released yesterday,” PadGadget reports. “Interestingly enough, if you happen to run one of the beta versions of OS X 10.6.5, the feature works, and is well documented in the release notes coming with the betas.”

PadGadget reports, “Having said that, and let’s make it clear, AirPrint has not been pulled, it just doesn’t work with shared printers, but works flawlessly if you happen to be the lucky owner of a network printer directly compatible.”

  1. This is exactly what was reported 3 days ago (at 9to5mac and cultofmac), that support for 10.6.5 (and somehow PCs) was “canceled” for now, despite promises made by Apple at the 4.2 keynote. This is disappointing, but not the end of the world. I’ve not yet needed to print anything from my iPad, but I was looking forward to trying it out.

  2. Very interesting! I’m still not quite clear. I work for a public agency and we’ve been awaiting this function. In the meantime, we have been using PrintBureau. Admittedly, it works with shared printers as well as those connected directly to the network (either by ethernet or wirelessly). However, it is a bit of a clunk solution. We were hoping AirPrint would bring the same solution, but in a smooth “Apple-esque” way.

  3. “I don’t care about wifi capable printers. I just want to know If I will be able to print from my iPad to the HP printer plugged into my airport extreme.”

I don’t believe this was ever the way it was supposed to work. The printer needed to be plugged into the mac and shared (via the mac)

  4. This is simple. The reason it works for the people who are running the 10.6.5 beta is because those people are also running the iTunes 10.1 beta. AirPrinting to shared printers requires iTunes 10.1. Once that is released, everyone will be able to any shared printers.

  5. If it works with the 4.2 GM how can we poor mortals get a copy. Give us a link to someone who will share. It appears that the post GM version has been changed. A strange thing as GM normally means final.

  6. I’ll say it again: Eurosmartz’s PrintCentral all used in tandem with their WePrint Server installed on a computer connected to a printer will allow you to print anything from an iOs device to any printer, across subnets or on the same network. It uses WebDav and DropBox and functions flawlessly. http://www.eurosmartz.com I’m not a shill, just a happy customer. FWIW

  7. Bleh….it can’t be that hard to get Bonjour on an iOS device can it Apple? Then I wouldn’t have to worry about wifi printers at all. And I could just use the one plugged into my Airport Extreme. Seems kinda pointless to have this AirPrint work ONLY with certain printers that are wifi capable.

  8. OK, so if the printer has an Ethernet port (like my Brother), or WIFI (like my Canon PIXMA), it should work?

I wonder what I would print? Maybe we will see a whole new site to the art apps.

  9. Hmmm… I’m an iOS developer with iOS 4.2 GM on my iPad and the official Snow Leopard 10.6.5 release on my iMac, and I can print just fine to any of my shared printers on the iMac. Not saying that something is not going on with the AirPrint feature for other people, but without official word from Apple, it’s all just speculation based on limited sample sizes.

  10. @iNeuron

… If you are running your OS X firewall in stealth mode, printer sharing is blocked anyway.

Odd, I’m running my iMac with stealth mode on and am still able to share my printer over my network…

My wife OFTEN wants to print things from her iPad whilst web surfing or reading email and hopefully AirPrint will come out sooner rather than later.
