RUMOR: Apple to release iOS 4.2 on Friday; iTunes 10.1 and OS X 10.6.5 due Wednesday

“An inside source at AT&T told MacStories that Apple is planning to release iOS 4.2, a major OS update for iPhones, iPods and iPads, on Friday November 12th at 10 AM PST,” Federico Viticci reports for MacStories.

“We also learned that updates to iTunes and Mac OS X will be released sometime tomorrow — iTunes will be reaching version 10.10.0 (simply called iTunes 10.1) and Mac OS X will jump to the long-awaited 10.6.5 version,” Viticci reports.

“Many users expected iOS 4.2 to be available today: iOS 4.2, however, depends on iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 for its AirPlay and AirPrint functionalities, respectively,” Viticci reports.

  1. Let us hope that as few iPhones are bricked or slowed down as possible. I experienced a bricked iPhone 3GS after an update, luckily it had automatically back itself up before resuming factory settings, i.e emergency calls only. A quick trip to an Apple store sorted it out. Wouldn’t want to make that trip again! Ps before you lot go on about it, it was not jailbroken.

  2. Can’t wait!!! I get my NEW appleTV end of this week, 4.2 this week hopefully!!! I really hope airplay is everything that its being hyped up to be right out the gate.

  3. Yes, I know. We’re all fanboys. But as a Mac user since 1984, and an Apple customer for longer than that, I have one big piece of advice:

    Wait.

Yes, wait. Hold off for a few days and make sure that no unforeseen bug in any of the updates to come is critical. I know you’re as impatient as a male teenager on prom night about stuff like this, but you could save a lot of aggravation should a big problem show up.

Let others be the guinea pigs. A couple of days won’t hurt. Hopefully, I’ll be wrong. But to get everything right is a huge challenge, especially because three big updates are all interdependent. If anyone can pull this off, it’s Apple. That said, I’ll be patient. I recommend that for once, you might want to be patient as well.

  4. @Brian,

I have also been on Mac since the beginning with a 128k machine ordered a month before release and I second your advice. On the other hand, the more folks who do the immediate update the sooner I know if there is an issue…..

  5. I really hope this update fixes the Proximity Issue. I’m so damn tired of playing Russian Roulette when I’m trying to find the speaker. Worse, When I’m trying to press the “End Call” button.

It shows, It doesn’t, It shows, Nope it doesn’t, It shows…Quick hit the “End Call” before…..Crap, Blank screen again.

    FIX IT PLEASE!

You can install far more apps than what are visible on the 11 pages. Why have you not installed as many as you need to? I have 753 Apps on my iPad. Go for it now rather than later.
