T-Mobile ‘get a Mac’-inspired ad pokes Apple’s FaceTime over Wi-Fi limit, blames AT&T (with video)

“T-Mobile kicked off a new campaign for its HSPA+ 3G network today with a TV commercial (below) poking fun at the limitations on the iPhone’s FaceTime video chat,” Electronista reports.

“The 30-second spot blames AT&T for Apple not allowing FaceTime over cellular until 2011 and portrays the rival carrier as an overweight man keeping the iPhone down,” Electronista reports. “The ad goes so far as to borrow Apple’s since discontinued ‘Get A Mac’ theme of two personifications talking to each other against a pure white backdrop.”

  1. This was done in the same vein as the Verizon “There’s a map for that” campaign, which some still swear was a personal dig at Apple. Here, as in the Verizon ads, the aim is squarely at the network, with the implication being that the device would work better if it wasn’t hobbled by ATT’s lackluster service.

  2. Facetime solves a lot of problems that others have. Setting up the connection, using IM is a pain and can become unstable.  Having a stable phone, with the gyroscope holding the phone does create a lot of pixilation.  I would like to see their phone in action.  Is the iPhone able to do   Facetime where 4G is available?

  3. Just how large is “America’s largest 4G network”? And is it disingenuous to call an HSPA+ 3G wireless network a 4G network? It is all getting so confusing…

Make it work. Make it fast. Quit limiting the functionality of the data pipe.

  4. Have anyone seen the 4G map lately? I can go to many Wifi places but I have to drive way out of town for 4G.

Sprint has had 4G for a while now.

Yeah, 4G is what everyone is going towards, even At&t but right now it is not ready.

  5. When you have clicktoflash installed web sites detect the availability of flash and give you flash content. If you remove flash and clicktoflash, web sites detect the absence of flash and can give you alternate content if available. Also, you show up in their logs as another non flash client helping to promote a non flash web.

  6. Thanks T-Mobile for advertising for Apple’s iPhone. Also pointing out AT&T’s lack of service. Get a clue AT&T, provide some 3G service and make it work for a change. What’s really sad is that AT&T is talking 4G already, they haven’t even got there 3G barely working, I don’t see how they plan on getting 4G working anytime soon with any coverage what so ever.
