T-Mobile ‘get a Mac’-inspired ad pokes Apple’s FaceTime over Wi-Fi limit, blames AT&T (with video)

“T-Mobile kicked off a new campaign for its HSPA+ 3G network today with a TV commercial (below) poking fun at the limitations on the iPhone’s FaceTime video chat,” Electronista reports.

“The 30-second spot blames AT&T for Apple not allowing FaceTime over cellular until 2011 and portrays the rival carrier as an overweight man keeping the iPhone down,” Electronista reports. “The ad goes so far as to borrow Apple’s since discontinued ‘Get A Mac’ theme of two personifications talking to each other against a pure white backdrop.”

  1. We don’t. T-Mobile made sure the ‘bad’ guy in this ad was clearly AT&T. If you watch a commercial, you’ll see that the iPhone is played by a young, cool, good looking guy. In other words, if only he were not saddled by that overweight, Ballmer-like bold (and fat) guy, he’d be flying just like that T-Mobile MyTouch 4G chick from T-Mobile.

On a subliminal level, the MyTouch phone (an Android) is represented by a girl, implying that it is more attractive to men than women…

  2. You can call me shallow all you like (all together, now…), but the actress in that spot was pretty hot.

If iPhone were available on T-mobile, I might just have to sign up for an iPhone 4. Just sayin’…

    btw, pretty good advert too.

  3. Windows 7 phone should do an ad. Scene: a youngish PC guy with Ballmer on his back, literally laying flat on the ground with Ballmer sitting on him. Sound bite claiming he and his older brother PC will never be hip, cool, or high tech, as long as he has this old fart squashing the life out of him. Ad pans to close up of the Win 7 phone screen, you hear a big Ballmer fart for the final voice over.)

(May his reign continue “as long as it takes.”)

  4. With any luck T-mobile will have the iPhone next year. I would love Apple to break the standard exclusivity model the networks have been plying for years.

Apple have gone multi-carrier for most countries now with resounding success. Once they do this in the US then the carriers will have lost one of their major holds on phone makers.

    So far Apple have:
    1. Demonstrated you can mkae a lot of money with phones and get the carrier to pay top dollar for it.
    2. Removed the stupid download services that the carriers try to gouge their customers with.
    3. Reduced the cost of data plans and with the iPad introduced the idea of pay as you go data.
    4. Broken (for the most part) the exclusivity deals.
    5. Successfully provided good internet applications to allow true mobile web use.
    6. Invented a new way of discovering apps and providing cheap access to games, services etc.

It is truly remarkable what Apple have do to the mobile industry. A bit like Gareth Bale destroying Inter Milan in Spurs 3-1 victory in the Champions League ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  5. I spoke with a T-Mobile rep in a store last week who said up to half their smart phone customers were already using iPhones running on T-Mobile. They even will support the phones. But the customer has to do the set up, however T-M will give advice. They are definitely experienced with it and support it.

And you don’t need to lock in to a data plan, you can also do regular pre-paid or pay-as-you-go with an iPhone on their network.
