Strategy Analytics: Apple controls 95% of tablet market

“Apple controlled 95 percent of the emerging market for tablet computers with its iPads in the July-to-September quarter, research firm Strategy Analytics (SA) said on Tuesday,” Tarmo Virki reports for Reuters. “The competition in the market is, however, tightening fast with handset vendors and PC makers moving into the new category of devices, between traditional PCs and smartphones, taking a cue from the success the iPad, a 10-inch touchscreen tablet that began selling in April.”

MacDailyNews Take: “Taking a cue” means ripping off without really understanding what they’re trying to rip off. Throwing cameras and USB ports on your fake iPad isn’t the answer. The answer is a decade plus of preparation; many years of laying the foundation required for superior user experiences.

Virki reports, “SA analyst Neil Mawston said the other platforms — Android, Microsoft, MeeGo of Nokia and Intel, Hewlett-Packard’s webOS and RIM’s Blackberry — have already much ground to make up.”

  1. Microsft has NEVER been a visionary company. Most of their expertise IS in marketing and taking advantage of sugar water CEO’s. It angers me (I know, gotta let it go) that Bill Gates is thought of as this “visionary” he distinctly is NOT. And if he isn’t what does that make the Ballmer Clown?

Never has such a large company which vitally depends on visionary leadership been so derived of same. And now that the times have changed and we are no longer in the conditions to produce a perfect “Microsoft Sh*t Storm” they are helpless and hapless to be nothing more than me too late responders. And in this game being late to the game is usually synonymous with losing the market.

They are no longer the leaders, if they ever truly were. It’s Apple’s game and Apple’s rules now. Since MS’s hearts are not truly in the consumer space they are doomed to lose dwindling mind share and subsequent hardware/OS share.

  3. “Who actually took a cue “

@Jim, try reading comprehension. The Strategic Analytics person said that. Second, the context was the vendors were “taking a cue” FROM THE SUCCESS of the iPad. This isn’t about who was first to market a tablet. This is about who was first to market a tablet SUCCESSFULLY. That’s what taking a cue is about. Noone wants to take a cue from a loser product.

“Just another rip off product that apple produces. Their only “genius” is in the marketing as to why you should spent double to triple the actual worth of their products.”

@Jim, so, 7″ tablets being priced the same as Apple’s iPad somehow means Apple is pricing the iPad “double to triple”?!? Is that the best myth you got?

“If Microsoft would’ve came out with the iPod, iPhone & iPad first then forced people to use their version of “itunes” as the only way to import music to the player”
So, what does Microsoft do with the Zune?

“(Plus they actually sold music there) and forced people to use their “App Store”as the only method of putting programs on the phone, they would have gotten sued by every company and government you can name for all kinds of anti-trust issues. “
And, Zune and WinPhone are not going to be vertically integrated? How can I put Sony Playstation apps on my Xbox 360? You mean Microsoft is forcing me to use only their apps on the Xbox? (sarcasm)

“Hell, Microsoft got sued for bundling their own FREE internet browser in eariler versions of windows.”
You must be 12 years old. It was never that simple. Microsoft INTEGRATED their browser into the OS, making it nigh impossible to remove.

“My point is Apple is only as successful as they are because they didn’t meet the resistance that a company like Microsoft would have surely met. I think the Apple Monopoly is coming to an end.”
Natural monopolies are LEGAL. It’s the abuse of a monopoly that is ILLEGAL. Got it? No, didn’t think so.

    Wow, where to begin.

“Microsoft developed touch screen tablets like ten years ago, so there is nothing “Revolutionary”about the iPad.”

So MS had a 10 year lead and they still failed?
Shouldn’t they had been the market leader in tablet sales?
Why is the general public buying iPads in record numbers?

“Just another rip off product that apple produces. Their only “genius” is in the marketing as to why you should spent double to triple the actual worth of their products.”

Most ignorant comment yet. You just might be a winner! The iPad is double to triple their actual worth?? Have you looked at what the competition is rolling out and their prices? My god you are stupid.

Apple has gotten a free ride.”

Umm, MS and others had MP3 players well before Apple did. They apparently didn’t do well with song syncing. Apple showed them how to do it right.
iPod, you don’t have to spend a dime on Apple’s music. Import your CDs and you’re all set. As to Apps, I guess you need to sue the makers of Nintendo, PS3, Xbox, etc… You can only buy games that work on the specific console. Will a PS3 game work on an Xbox?

    You don’t know squat.

Plus, if you don’t like Apple’s closed system, DON”T BUY APPLE PRODUCTS!!

  7. The tablet has one very important use. It is the best system there is for working with JigZone.com puzzles. My 6 year old motion M1300 is still carrying on (after enough jury rigs to qualify for “There I fixed It” because it fulfills this “necessary” role. The iPad is terrible at this, even though it now sort-of works.

  9. The Fire Marshall did their yearly inspection of my business a few months back. They used a Windows based tablet and it was hilarious. While they were doing their inspection, one guy tried to update some of my information in the system. It took him the whole 20 minutes to input it. Then, they couldn’t get it to print. So, they had to write everything down on a paper form and give it to me. It had to be the biggest waste of time I’ve ever witnessed. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

So, when Jim talks about Microsoft having a tablet 10 years ago. It’s like comparing a Model T to a beautiful Ferrari 458 Italia.

“My point is Apple is only as successful as they are because they didn’t meet the resistance that a company like Microsoft would have surely met. I think the Apple Monopoly is coming to an end.”

    Uh, right.

Although it is not critical to your statement, it should first be noted that MS would never have brought those things to market on their own. On the hardware end they wanted to use the model of licensing windows to box makers. Even if they wanted to, they seem incapable of doing so, see for example the touch tablet they had years ago. Marketing? How about not knowing what to make and what to make it do. That is the “revolutionary” part of the iPad. I think we remember how many in the tech press hammered the iPad when it came out because it wasn’t what they envisioned. Yet it is a great device. The idea that having the best tech specs and most features being secondary to ease of use apparently was pretty revolutionary.

Your argument is based on the notion that since MS got sued for IE bundling, they could not have a iPod/iTunes integration like Apple. However, these examples are quite different. In the Windows/IE example, they had >90% market share and their choice on default browser controlled the browser software market.

On the mobile device side, even if MS had a model like Apples at first, and there is no reason to think they the could or wanted to, they would not have been starting with such control over the market. They could not have been sued. In media players, MS went for Plays for Shizzle until they realized that media players were not desktops and copied the iPod with Zune. There have been no threats of lawsuits regarding the closed system of Zune.

Actually, MS’s problem isn’t even a revolutionary touch interface. They need a cheap but powerful ultra-low-power chip and they need and OS that can maximize battery-life to 10 – 12 hours. Intel doesn’t have it and they can’t port Win7 to ARM.

  15. @MacDailyNews Take: “Throwing cameras and USB ports on your fake iPad isn’t the answer.”

Perhaps not, but I believe that the iPad could benefit from both. The dock connector is great. But wouldn’t it be nice to be able to plug in a USB stick to access or transfer some documents? The addition of camera(s) to the iPad seem to be pretty much a sure thing given the release of FaceTime.
