There is a chance that some Android app may provide similar functionality. However, as long as stories such as this one start proliferating, the general public perception will continue to be that there is only one iPhone, and everything else is just significantly inferior.

You are right. There is a chance that there is an Android app that will do this , but this woman had an iPhone!. So what are you moaning about? If the robber stole a Mercedes with tracking, would you complain that people are being misled that this is not available on a GM car and the reporter should have mentioned that?
And yes, there is only one iPhone, and everything else IS inferior.
