Apple releases iOS 4.2 Golden Master to devs; iOS 4.2 jailbreak due 2 days after public release

“Apple has released iOS 4.2 build 8C134 for both iPad and iPhone/iPod touch devices, indicating the company is close to public release of the new operating system, originally slated for delivery this month,” Daniel Eran Dilger reports for AppleInsider..

“Apple’s chief executive Steve Jobs demonstrated iOS 4.2 at the company’s iPod event early in September, showing off new features such as AirPlay wireless streaming of audio, video and photos to the new Apple TV or other AirPlay-compliant devices, an expansion of the company’s existing, audio-only AirTunes feature,” Dilger reports. “Jobs also introduced the company’s entirely new AirPrint wireless printing architecture, designed to enable users to create hard copies of web pages, emails and photos managed through a new Print Center app.”

Dilger reports, “The new update will also finally bring multitasking features and iOS Folders to the iPad, along with a variety of other features currently only available on the iPhone and iPod touch, such as support for multiple email aliases, a unified inbox, and messages organized by threads in Mail, and the ability to open attachments in third party apps.”

  1. 4.2 cannot get here fast enough. I have run out of screen space for all my app icons and have to search for all recently downloaded apps. This feels so counter-intuitive and so un-Apple like. How is there not at least some kind of app list that let’s you see everything downloaded to the iPad. It is so frustrating to have to search for apps, especially if you cannot remember how they are named. I am sure there are several apps that I don’t even remember downloading. Yes I am an app hoarder so if anyone has any tips or tricks to deal with this before 4.2 gets released I would be greatly appreciative.

This comment was created using my brand new iPod Touch 4th gen on which I am enjoying folders. Happily my Apple catalog is growing! Now if Sprint will get the iPhone I will be one happy camper.

  3. @ob1spyker,

You asked for tips or tricks to deal with your app hoarding problem…

Here’s a tip… Purchase an ice pick. Then slam it, pointed end first, into one of your ears… The pain should be sufficient to distract you until 4.2 comes out…

    Enjoy!

  5. Jailbreak? BFD. All this noise about jailbreaking is unwarranted. How many people really do it? Answer: not many. It’s for total losers who think they’re smarter than you are. But they’re not. In this case, it’s best to follow the wisdom of the crowds.

Remember to vote early and often today.

    That’s so sad.

Cowboy up, you whiner! I should have your problems.

I should be overwhelmed with so many apps that I have rendered my iPad totally useless, because I can’t make sense of what I have or where it’s at, forcing my to use my brand new iPod Touch 4th gen to brag about it on MDN.

    Pussy!

  9. @JustMeToo & @G4Dualie

Wow! How disappointing and yet somehow not that surprising. It is no wonder why people have such disdain for “Apple Fanboys.” These two mentally challenged commentators exhibit all that is wrong with this “Steve Jobs is God and Apple can do no wrong” mantra that is rife on sites like this one among others. As is usual with most zealotry a vocal minority skews the publics perception of the expense of the silent majority. Unfortunately it is never in the best interest of the ideal.

This is a surprising response from these two brain deficient imbeciles because I did not view the post as whiny or really anti-Apple, yet they jumped at the chance spew their hateful venom. All I was asking is if anyone had a workaround to the issue of having more apps on their device than screen real estate. Somehow I don’t think the ice pick would solve this issue. Perhaps maybe if I used it to gouge out my eyes so I would not have to suffer any future infantile posts from such idiots. Maybe that could be used as a solution.

I believe wholeheartedly that it is our responsibility to challenge the creators of the items we consume, especially if it is to address a perceived shortcoming of a particular item. If we just accept being spoon fed whatever crap that comes down the pike than we do not deserve innovation or quality.

The iPad has been a watershed event for me. Since my initial purchase (my first ever Apple product) I have purchased an iMac and just got the new iPod Touch 4. These statements are not meant to gloat or boast. They are mentioned to highlight the real reason Apple stock continues to soar higher and higher each week.

People like myself are getting into Apple, and there are a lot more of us. Especially since Microsoft still holds about 85% of the US market. That’s a lot of potential Mac buyers, which in turn will propel Apple’s stock even higher and make more money for the lot of people on this site that bought into Apple when it was cheap.

People like Justmetoo and G4Dualie do not advance the postion of Apple by being belligerent to newbies like myself. I have to be honest, after reading their posts I end up questioning if I even want to be a part of a movement that includes people like them. (I await seeing the previous sentence highlighted and then being told to run along back to MS or some other derogatory statement.) I’m sure MS has their fanboys too but somehow Apple’s always seem more vocal and venomous. Most importantly they devalue and marginalize those who support and are passionate for Apple products. This is the true crime here.

Like I said, it was not my intention to whine, just to point out something that I see as a short coming and to ask a community whose Apple IQ is supposedly higher than mine if there was something they knew of that would help me without having to connect to iTunes. And it was not my intention to brag about my new iPod Touch as much as it was to point out that Apple is drawing me into it’s ranks by purchasing more of their products, which a lot of posters here do as well.

I will never just sit by and take what is given me without question.
I will question Steve Jobs and Apple over things that I believe are inherent issues with their products as I have with MS in the past. We are currently living during a time where we are coming out of our dependence on MS and truly have a choice that is growing. Newbies should be welcomed and not browbeat back down and sent packing to MS or whatever alternative comes up (Android?) At that point who does that really serve?
